Once upon a time, there was a little dog, a beagle - dachshund mix. He had a long, chubby body; short, stubby legs; long, floppy ears; a long, squat head; and a beagle's coat of brown and black splotches on a white background.

Floods have brought rare relief to the Southwest as Lake Powell, the second-largest reservoir in the US, rose more than 20 feet (6.1m) from its mid-September low. Powell remains just ~25% full, though. Winter snowpack will be crucial for the water supply.

If you're wondering "WTF is a Bose-Einstein condensate," it's a phase of matter in which SOOPER-DOOPER COLD atoms slow down, sorta merge, and behave as if the collection of atoms was one big atom.
Imagine it like this: Say the atoms are tennis balls that zip around every ...
A Bose-Einstein condensate reached about 10 trillionths of a kelvin.

Not every galaxy follows the blueprint.
NGC 4725 is a rare "one-armed" barred spiral galaxy wrapped in a ring of star formation.
Studying unusual galaxies like this one helps scientists understand how the gravity from a passing galaxy can trigger bursts of star formation.

ALT This is a composite image of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 4725 against a black background filled with stars and distant galaxies. The galaxy appears tilted diagonally, with a bright cream-colored central bar surrounded by a soft blue disk. A single prominent spiral arm wraps around the galaxy, giving it an unusual one-armed appearance. Small magenta points scattered throughout the galaxy represent X-ray sources detected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. The galaxy is encircled by a faint ring of star formation, while bright foreground stars sparkle throughout the surrounding field of view.
