I won't bury the lede: Friday will be my last day at the @IdahoStatesman. For the past five years, I’ve dedicated myself to learning the ins and outs of the criminal justice system. I’ve covered everything from breaking news to the state's highest-profile criminal cases.

Fantastic news!!! The Supreme Court declined to hear the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s appeal of a ruling requiring the company to pay back its workers for the cuts to pay, illegally implemented increases in health care costs & more. When we fight, we win!!! ✊✊✊

Is this what you want from your local news? Demand that McClatchy actually invest in Idaho and reverse its mass layoffs. We've built a super easy tool for you to email management directly 👉actionnetwork.org/letters/as…

We returned to the bargaining table today after a months-long break, eager to finally hear management's first proposal. We've presented 25 proposals without a single response. Today we got theirs, and it was worse than we expected. 🧵(1)

The Fresno Bee Guild learned on Sept. 10 six reporters, a photojournalist and an editor will be laid off from The Bee within a few weeks. That's nearly half of our staff. Help our laid off colleagues pay their bills here: gofundme.com/f/help-fresno-b…

I took a few days to think and plot my next move but wanted to let everyone know that after a combined 24 years, next Friday (Sept. 25) will be my last day at the @MiamiHerald I was one of the 30 employees laid off last week by McClatchy in the latest awful day for our industry..

As part of these sweeping cuts at our company (Chatham/McClatchy), both the Sacramento Bee and Charlotte Observer dismissed their NBA beat writers. That leaves my pal, the excellent @Anthony_Chiang, as the only NBA beat writer among the chain's 28 newspapers. (A reminder that aggregators will have nothing to aggregate if there's nobody actually at the arena and practice courts covering the teams.)

Looking for a way to support laid-off workers? We’ve launched a GoFundMe to help get these dedicated reporters back on their feet. Anything helps. Please share to spread the news.
10 Idaho Statesman reporters — more than half the staff — were laid off Thursday by McClatchy, our hedge-fund-backed owner. Sadly, many don’t have large savings. Please consider donating to help cover their bills. Any amount helps! bit.ly/4cGQk8X

I wrote about the massacre at McClatchy, a rough day that saw newsrooms gutted from Charlotte to Miami to Sacramento. Through it all, McClatchy is still implausibly claiming it remains "deeply committed to local journalism." status.news/p/mcclatchy-layo…

Please consider donating to support the laid off McClatchy journalists at the Idaho Statesman who just lost half of their staff.

This will be a long thread. Please stick with it. The Miami Herald, one of the premier legacy newspapers in America, laid off or wrote off more than 30 positions today – well over one-third of its editorial staff. The cuts include crucial accountability beats. (1)

The 41% needs to be verified. McClatchy execs decided to push AI slop on news sites. You can’t pivot to AI, cut 40% of your local journalists and write “we remain deeply committed to local journalism.” You’re lying.
NEW: Huge layoffs across McClatchy newspapers today, with some newsrooms gutted by a third. An internal email from management says consumer revenue has dipped 41% and "we cannot continue investing where subscriber interest does not support the investment"

Yesterday, McClatchy laid off more than 90 unionized media workers across 17 publications. The departure of these talented reporters, visual journalists & writers will immediately leave gaping holes in local coverage for dozens of communities across the US.

Today, I was one of many laid off by McClatchy. I am deeply grateful to @IdahoStatesman for being the first newsroom I got to call home and the reporters and editors I learned so much from. I’ll be looking for new opportunities to continue my work as a journalist.
The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington. These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account. These are journalists  who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol. McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

The decline of the @mcclatchy newspaper chain is particularly dark and dramatic. Once a beacon of community-focused, quality journalism, its outlets are becoming empty shells of AI-produced drivel. Shame on its vulture capitalist owners, Chatham Asset Management. lpm.org/news/2026-09-10/mccl…

I’m one of the journalists who has been laid off. My heart hurts for my coworkers and for our community, which just gets less and less important coverage. If anyone knows of journalism jobs that are open, I’ll be looking!

Please note: There are nation wide layoffs happening at McClatchy. We are only speaking on behalf of our bargaining units. Statements from other NewsGuild locals and the national union will come out in the following days.
