What was Vincent actually like?
More than 60 years after meeting him, the girl in the portrait, Adeline Ravoux, could still remember him clearly.
She recalled a man who spoke little, walked with his head slightly tilted and always seemed to have a half-smile on his lips.
This is how she described him: ‘So simple and kind […] he had a great deal of charm.’
And when she sat for him? Vincent barely spoke. He was completely absorbed in his painting, endlessly puffing on his pipe until he disappeared into what Adeline remembered as ‘a veritable cloud of smoke’.
