Lula victory speech: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. We cannot have monstrously huge corporations earning millions & billions, paying no taxes to this country & trying to steer this country's election results."

This, from the rooftops.
Democrats should realize that what Meta did in Brazil, they and other social media companies will do in the US in 2028 unless they are made to understand they will face criminal penalties for it

I find Pix fascinating and wish there was more good long form about it
One of Lula’s most important and least well-known achievements is US capacity to sanction it into compliance is limited, because unlike Europe, Brazilians don’t need Visa or Mastercard to make payments.

Lula was only 33 when he led the strike alongside the metalworkers’ union that challenged Brazil’s military dictatorship. He secured wage increases and was imprisoned. His rival, the far-right Flávio Bolsonaro, on the other hand, has had only one occupation since the age of 21: spending his wealthy family’s money and engaging in far-right thuggery.

Every time I live through yet another Brazilian election I can’t but marvel at an electoral system that can count 120 million votes in a single evening. Take a bow, Brazil

Brazilian President Lula: It is not possible that we are not aware that a crime in the digital world must be treated just like a crime in real life. We cannot have monstrously huge corporations earning millions and billions, paying no taxes to this country, and trying to steer this country's election results.

A Texas father who had lived in the U.S. for 25 years with no criminal record was finishing his night shift as an Uber driver when immigration agents detained him. Without being able to speak to his lawyer or a judge, he was put on a plane and sent first to Ghana, a country where he had no ties. He was then sent to his home country, despite a determination by a U.S. immigration court judge that he could not be deported there due to likely persecution. cbsn.ws/3Ude66r

A real shame because it has had some fantastic reporting.
News: Rest of World, the nonprofit newsroom focused on the impact of technology outside the West founded by Sophie Schmidt, tells donors in an email it will “cease publishing as a standalone entity” at the end of January.

Musk's claim that Ukraine violated Starlink's "terms of service" is what last week I wrote was likely behind the slow-down. This ambiguity is part of the problem: it leaves to Musk to decide what is/isn't proper use for a country at war. bostonglobe.com/2026/10/23/o…

Some very sad news out of Stimson this week. I feel so lucky to have gotten to know Mat and learn from him, even if only for a little while. A true patriot, and a genuinely thoughtful and humane man, in all senses of the word. stimson.org/2026/stimson-cen…

You're right that this is a nice meal for some. In 2024, a rib-eye steak at the Wichita, Kansas location cost $38.95 (5 hours and 22 mins of work on min wage). After Trump's trade wars and Iran war, that same meal now costs $43.95, adding nearly an extra hour of work on that wage
For a love of working-class people in Michigan, Cheesecake Factory is a really nice meal that they have to save up to afford. Just so how disconnected he is…. world apart from when he was on fire 20 years ago

This is actually a condescending view of working-class people. I grew up in a working-class immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster and The Cheesecake Factory for "fancy nights out." But even we understood that the White House should not look like the inside of a Red Lobster. Working-class people are not culturally illiterate just because their experiences are shaped by their limited means.
Does Obama not understand that to most Americans the Cheesecake Factory is a very nice and fancy restaurant?

Starshield/Starlink speed restrictions remain in place. Every day matters for Ukraine, because every Ukrainian life matters. Our people are waiting for positive news, hoping that the restrictions will be lifted and our defenders will have the capabilities they need to protect lives. Unfortunately, as of today, nothing has changed. We continue to wait.
