Aristotle’s schema employs things like formal cause and final cause, which modern science eschewed. Fair enough, insofar as it has allowed us to *do* more. But our understanding is far less. When physics is ultimately math, as at present, we don’t actually understand anything

Here is why I made this outrageous claim:
1. Big state schools are vulnerable to the worst trends in GenEd, such as asynchronous online courses.
2. State university systems have been slashing languages, philosophy, literature etc along with theoretical math, chem, physics .. 1/x

C.S. Lewis writing about living in a world with nuclear bombs. Always relevant.

ALT If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.

When you teach a survey course, you can assign relatively bad books if they fill in part of the developmental story. Or you can summarize them in lecture to save time. But in great books pedagogy, all the books have to be, well, great. On their own terms, now, for new readers.

Out today at @Plough - I wrote about language models and liturgy! For your consideration, as the temperature of the discourse on AI and the church keeps increasing:

The perfect image for what is wrong with education. No one teaches football, piano, martial arts, or ballet by video alone. Should we care as much or more about reading?
“In baseball I have a coach. You need the coach to really care about you to feel like you’re enough for that team and work together... But in the classroom setting, the professor is just up there teaching without knowing who the actual person is.”
