6–2–1 without Matheson.
The blueline isn’t collapsing. The minutes are being absorbed. The team keeps winning.
Remind me what exactly they’re desperately missing?
At some point, maximizing players’ trade values becomes counterproductive if keeping them costs you wins. Who cares if their returns drop from mid-round picks to 7ths if moving them improves the team? The objective is winning games, not protecting depreciating assets.
Apparently Owen Beck dropping the gloves is a bigger threat to the Habs than their historically embarrassing defensive coverage. Good to know. Would hate to reward a young player for bringing something this team desperately lacks.
The Habs have a surplus of bodies and some pretty obvious decisions to make. Instead, we’re watching the same players get endless opportunities while others actually earn their minutes. This is starting to feel a little too much like the Bergevin boys club era.

I’ve yet to see the blueline that “desperately misses” Mike Matheson. Those tough minutes everyone insisted only he could handle seem to be getting handled just fine.
Two more weeks for Engström to prove that Mike Matheson is a luxury Montreal can afford to move, not a necessity they need to keep.
Billy Ryan deserves a medal for keeping a straight face while a career .880 goaltender explained to him what makes a good goalie.
