I went on a trip down memory lane with this story in the new November issue of @BirdWatchingMag, featuring snipe, sanderlings, spotted flycatchers, yellowhammers and a dog called Smartie...

Always worth a visit to @YorksWildlife Askham Bog. So lucky to have it just up the road. Today's highlights: garden warbler & female blackcap by the pond + great spotted woodpecker. Soundtrack of song thrush, chiffchaffs, willow warblers, blackbirds, robins & wrens @YorkBirding

Today the American wigeon near East Cottingwith was much more obliging (and actually there, which helped). Pic taken at around 2.20pm today. @YorkBirding @BirdGuides

Not the best video you'll ever see, but here's some shaky footage of the pectoral sandpiper at @NosterfieldLNR Flask Lake yesterday afternoon, surrounded by lapwings.
My grandad used to say 13 was his lucky number, so I adopted it myself. It proved successful today. After going round the wrong part of @NosterfieldLNR & eventually finding Flask Lake, I finally got my first pectoral sandpiper from this very spot as dusk approached @BirdGuides

It was well hidden at first among all the lapwings, golden plovers, black-headed and common gulls, then did a telltale sandpiper sprint into the open.
