Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon on Friday in the room set up on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office.
Several members of Gemelli's medical and nursing staff attended the Mass, along with members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps.
"In his homily, the Pope thanked all the staff—doctors, nurses, and orderlies—for the work they do every day caring for patients in their frailty, and especially for what they have done and continue to do for him," read the statement.

Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, as planned, according to a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora released by the Holy See Press Office.
The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung, and tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of “lung adenocarcinoma,” as suspected from tests conducted beforehand.
The Pope was in the operating room approximately three hours, while the operation itself lasted about 90 minutes. The doctors said it was successful and there were no complications.
Pope Leo awoke normally after surgery and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor, according to the statement.

Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.

Where patients receive cancer care matters. In our new @JSurgResearch study of 47,783 stage III/IV melanoma pts, care at high-volume immunotherapy hospitals was associated with greater immunotherapy use, higher survival (adjusted HR 0.83), and fewer observed racial disparities.

What is the optimal surgical approach for adenocarcinoma of the oesophagogastric junction?
Zheng et al. present “Prospective evaluation of radical surgery for adenocarcinoma of oesophagogastric junction: real-world insights from the CLAEG study” via bit.ly/4j59Xv6
Drawing on the large prospective CLAEG registry across 44 high-volume centres and more than 2,000 radical resections, this study provides valuable real-world data on lymph-node metastasis patterns and surgical outcomes. The analysis helps clarify where metastatic lymph nodes are most commonly found and examines important questions around the extent and type of surgery.
The findings provide practical evidence to inform surgical decision-making for this increasingly important and challenging cancer.
