I'm a center Dem who doesn't want the status quo. I want money out of politics. I want money in my pocket. I want affordable healthcare. (I don't expect the government to solve healthcare, I expect them to regulate it, invest in it, and stop cutting safety nets so that good quality healthcare is accessible and affordable for all.) And I want Accountability. The Constitutional loopholes abused by this administration need to be closed. This level of corruption and deconstruction of our institutions should never be allowed to happen again. Most importantly, I want PERMANENT protections on our protected lands and endangered species, so that we don't revert every four years, and fall victim to Big Oil and corporate greed. We should demand these things. It's our tax dollars.

WE DON’T WANT POLITICAL THEATER. WE WANT ACCOUNTABILITY. Enough with the press conferences, empty promises, and investigations that lead nowhere. And spare us the tired speeches about putting our differences aside and working together. UNITY IS NOT IMMUNITY. We want subpoenas. Sworn testimony. Evidence made public. Criminal referrals where warranted. And prosecutions when the evidence supports them. No backroom deals. No protecting political allies. No sweeping corruption under the rug in the name of bipartisanship. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DIDN’T DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY JUST TO WATCH CONGRESS NEGOTIATE IT AWAY.

Everywhere you look, there are opinions on Tuesday’s midterm election. On the left, it’s gleeful jubilation and on the right it’s elegiac dirges. So, here’s my take on it. I believe the One Big Beautiful Butt-kicking happened because most Americans are angry about the four Cs: Costs, Cruelty, Chaos, and Corruption. And rather than focusing on the issues that matter most to ordinary Americans, Trump – with the acquiescence of this Republican sycophants – started a new war in collaboration with Benjamin Netanyahu, tossed around tariffs and drove up prices for consumers, turned federal law enforcement into his personal Gestapo, embraced America’s enemies and maligned America’s friends, and enriched himself and his oligarch allies while working class Americans saw their financial situations worsen. Millions of Americans who supported Trump in 2024 felt that he abandoned them and the promises he made, and to paraphrase Howard Beale’s famous line in the 1976 movie Network, they were mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. I rarely agree with Ted Cruz, but his post-election assessment of the midterms was spot on: “2026 was not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami. It was an ass kicking. It was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election. It was a Watergate-level repudiation.” I’ve seen some on the right trying to downplay the outcome by claiming that Republican voters just weren’t motivated and stayed home rather than going out and voting. Cruz dismissed that notion saying, “the problem wasn’t turnout. Instead, our voters – Republicans, Libertarians, Independents – showed up and voted, and rejected our candidates, voting Democrat instead.” Republican Mayor of Oklahoma City David Holt summed it up well: “A political party that is morally and intellectually bankrupt deserves the rebuke of the American people. It’s now time to make America good again.” So, Republicans have some soul searching to do as they decide how to revamp their imagio in the wake of the repudiation of Trump and the extreme MAGA agenda. I wish them good luck with that. Democrats deserve to celebrate. I wouldn’t have bet 50 cents on the outcome of Tuesday night. It exceeded the wildest expectations of even the most optimistic progressives. But the celebration needs to end soon because now the hard part begins. I hope Democrats aren’t deluding themselves into thinking that the millions of people who voted for Trump in the past and voted blue on Tuesday fell in love with the Democratic Party and are now wedded to it. The majority of Americans still loathe both parties; they just loathe the Republican Party under the domination of Trump more. If Democrats want to keep these swing voters in the blue camp, Democrats have to demonstrate that they understand what matters to the majority of Americans and will do something about it. Democrats have to prove that they are capable of doing two things at once and keeping both in balance. First, there has to be accountability for the excesses and abuses of the past two years. And that can’t be the blind retribution and cruelty that Trump has employed; it must be focused and deliberate. I believe the failure to hold Nixon accountable after Watergate and Obama’s “look forward, not back” policy that gave impunity to Bush and Cheney for their post-9/11 abuses gave rise to the notion that Trump embraced that those at the top can do whatever they want with no consequences. Accountability needs to be fast, firm, and fair, so Democrats need to get on with it as soon as the 120th Congress is sworn in. At the same time, Democrats have to deliver on the issues that matter to the majority of Americans. That means using the power to conduct oversight hearings and the power of the purse to take actions that will bring down costs. It means taking action to address wealth and income inequality. It means making affordable healthcare available to all Americans. It means making amends with our allies and tightening the screws on America’s enemies. It means revising our wasteful fiscal approach and addressing our 40.5 trillion dollar national debt. It means tax policies that are fair to all and not tilted in favor of billionaires and big corporations. It means shoring up Social Security. It means getting the government out of places where it doesn’t belong, like locker rooms and bathrooms. So, for now, celebrate, but put it to bed soon and get on with the tasks that are in hand. Do it well – and that’s a tall, tall order – and I suspect you’ll be celebrating again in 2028. Do it poorly and you’ll be as sad then as Laura Loomer and Franklin Graham are now.

In Fahrenheit 451, the chief book-burner, Captain Beatty, describes how reading became obsolete because the public demanded increasingly fast-paced entertainments, and those entertainments slowly corroded their ability to think. “Books cut shorter. Condensations. Digests, tabloids. Everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending. Classics cut to fit fifteen-minute radio shows, then cut again to fill a two-minute book column … Many were those whose sole knowledge of Hamlet was a one-page digest in a book that claimed, ‘Now at last you can read all the classics.’ … School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches?” In this passage Ray Bradbury foretells the intellectual hollowing out of the working class, the advent of AI-generated “summaries” of classic novels, the attention-frying culture of short-form video, the relaxation of educational standards into non-existence. All of this in a book published in 1953.
Starting to really understand why a core theme of dystopian novels is that nobody reads

Paul Krugman's advice for Congressional Dems: force Trump to veto it I fully agree, it's a win/win situation Either it will show the GOP voting against positive legislation, or the bill will pass and improve everyone's lives

I'm not a political consultant. Just a voter who is also an activist and a strategic advisor to media companies. So if I was designing what the Democrats in Congress should do in their first five days on the job in January, here's what I suggest - feel free to add to the list. Let's keep them busy and focused on what's important. Day 1: Pass a comprehensive ethics bill, covering Congress' insider trading and stock purchases, the Supreme Court, and Trump and his family's unbelievable self-dealing. Day 2: Focus on cutting costs - Restore the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, raise the minimum wage, pause the gas tax, put a huge tax on the oil companies. Day 3: Eliminate all funding to ICE and restore the Office of Customs and Border Patrol to focus on actual criminals who are here illegally. Day 4: Begin aggressive oversight on RFK Jr. - the nation's health is paramount and the cuts in medical research and other insane policies need to be reversed. Day 5: End the Iran War by passing the War Powers Resolution, restore the careers of the Generals and other leaders that Hegseth fired, and while you are at it, impeach Hegseth. Day 6: (I know it's a Saturday, but show the American people how serious you are and work an extra day): Haul the FCC and FTC into Congress and begin the process of passing legislation to break apart media and technology monopolies. This isn't hard - Democrats have 2 months to do the work and build consensus among their members. Strike hard. Strike fast. And never forget the message from this election.

Guys, guys, I just called my Dem Congressman's office to tell him I don't want Jeffries as speaker and before I was even done with my preamble, the staffer said, let me guess what you're going to say...he said he's been hearing it all day and then he asked me what I'd like to see Democrats do and had a 10 minute conversation with me. He even asked me to repeat some items from my laundry list so he could write it down. I also called my Senator. Who has also been getting calls about new leadership. Call your reps!

Not a single judge should be confirmed. Not a district court judge, not a circuit court of appeals judge, and certainly not a Justice of the Supreme Court. Call it the "Modified McConnell Rule" - Presidents in their 2d terms who lose 8 or more seats don't get to nominate judges🤷‍♂️
Schumer: "This war must end. It must end. And make no mistake, whenever Trump defies the will of the American people or the law, we will launch investigations, take him to court, and entangle him in legislative razor wire. The days of Trump's supplicant Senate are over."
