It’s always in the wee hours of the day that I recall times way back when. It’s 6 AM and this old lady has not slept. The house was up for sahur and so I couldn’t go back to sleep. It’s so quiet here, you know? Crickets everywhere. And by 6 AM the birds sing.

Tragic Sumatra event. Mudslides in mountainous areas where deforestation occurs seem so much more severe than in Kalimantan swamps where we work. Deforestation everywhere has severe&dangerous consequences &needs to be stopped. I weep&pray for the innocent #orangutans of Tapanuli

This was a Tapanuli orangutan, the world’s rarest great ape.
Its decayed body was recently found among logging debris and mud, a consequence of extreme weather exacerbated by large-scale deforestation in North Sumatra. Up to 54 members of its family might also have been killed.
