👶🧠❄️ Conventional wisdom: Do not perform MRI during cooling because you will not see brain injury Our new study suggests otherwise. In our cohort (largest reported so far), MRI on day 2 during cooling predicted the extent of brain injury in ~95% of babies.

Why does this matter? 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Earlier answers for families 🏥 More informed clinical decisions when difficult questions arise about continuing, escalating, or limiting care 🧠 Earlier identification of babies most likely to benefit from future brain repair therapies

— Why this Swiss doctor chose Canada to advance newborn brain care 🧠👶 At the MCH, Dr. Pia Wintermark is leading groundbreaking research to improve treatment for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a condition caused by a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain at birth. Her idea, first developed as a medical student in Switzerland, was bold: exploring whether sildenafil could help protect newborn brains. Today, that once-unconventional hypothesis is at the centre of promising clinical trials and a $1.7M national research initiative. Now based in Montreal, Dr. Wintermark has found a setting where innovation is encouraged and impactful ideas can grow, helping improve outcomes for some of the most vulnerable patients. Her work is a powerful example of how research, collaboration and bold thinking can shape the future of care, and bring hope to families. 🔗 Read the full story: begiant.ca/stories/people/pi…

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is caused by lack of blood flow and oxygen to the brain at birth. But what if a little blue pill could change everything? Yes, *that* blue pill. Read more about Montreal doctor @PiaWintermark's once-unorthodox idea: begiant.ca/stories/people/pi…

Meeting with Courtney Shea and Be Giant prompted me to revisit my earliest days in neonatal neurocritical care. It reminded me why this work began, why it continues, and why Canada became home 🇨🇦🔬👩‍🔬👶🧠💗 thanks to them for telling the story so thoughtfully

🧠👶🧪 The sildenafil saga continues — this time in basic science. In a newborn rat model of neonatal HIE, we show that sildenafil reduces harmful neuroinflammation, protects and repairs white matter, supports oligodendrocytes/myelination, and preserves healthy brain cells.

These findings help bridge bench 🔬 to bedside 🏥 and strengthen the biological rationale for sildenafil as a potential adjunct therapy to support brain recovery after HIE. 📄 Yazdani et al., Scientific Reports rdcu.be/e1tNC #NeonatalBrain #HIE #SildenafilForHIE

Always love to read the stories of our little patients. They rock beyond their years 💪💪💪👶🏼🧠🩷
💙 — A thank you from Adam's parents 🏥👶 When baby Adam was born, he faced a serious challenge: he was deprived of oxygen and diagnosed with Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). He was quickly transferred to the MCH, where our NICU team was ready to act. “Each member of the staff took the time to reassure us with kindness and compassion,” Adam’s parents shared. “I was relieved to see a team that was attentive to every detail, thinking as much about our baby as about us as parents.” Today, Adam’s family is grateful not only for the care he received but also for the chance to participate in a study led by Dr. Pia Wintermark, helping advance care for future patients. Thank you to his family for sharing their story with us.💙
