The white-black 8th grade math gap is the widest it has been since 1978 at 33 points. This comes after $2 trillion in federal K-12 spending since 1965. Over 60% of black 8th graders scored below basic in 2024. COVID wiped out two decades of progress in 3 years, with Black 4th graders dropping 13 points against 5 for White kids. Fryer found the gap gone at kindergarten once you control for a few socioeconomic variables, then it reappears in school.
