🏴 #CORSICA: Corsican nationalists have withdrawn from autonomy negotiations with #France following a controversial vote in the French Senate earlier this week (October 26th). The decision came after senators voted to remove recognition of a distinct Corsican community from proposed constitutional reforms that would grant the island greater self-government. Corsican nationalist senator Paulu-Santu Parigi announced the withdrawal, accusing the French government and Senate of undermining years of negotiations. The autonomy process began in 2022, following widespread unrest over the murder of imprisoned Corsican nationalist Yvan Colonna. We were on the ground in Corsica when clashes broke out. The negotiations were intended to establish greater political autonomy for Corsica while keeping the island within France. This new development comes amid renewed activity by the Corsican National Liberation Front (FLNC), an underground armed separatist movement responsible for decades of bombings and attacks against French state interests. In August, masked FLNC militants held an armed press conference rejecting the proposed autonomy agreement and warning against continued settlement by outsiders on the island. The collapse of nationalist participation in negotiations raises fresh questions about Corsica’s political future and the possibility of renewed separatist violence. The FLNC has not publicly responded to the latest developments.
