I feel like it’s incredibly negligent to simply leave out the fact Abdul had to endure some of the most racist rhetoric of the 21st century. Being the first muslim senator obviously took a toll on his performance, and yet he still won by 7 points.
It’s going to be a really strange coalition of progressives and frontliners from red states voting against Jeffries and Schumer.
Leading the last uncalled Senate race in the South by 2,574 votes, Mississippi's Scott Colom was asked on live television whether he would back Chuck Schumer to lead the new majority. He answered with a map. WATCH

Asked why he devoted so much time to Michigan, Jim Clyburn compared the hostility Abdul El-Sayed faced to the struggles of civil rights icon John Lewis, citing Lewis’ beating on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and El-Sayed becoming the first Muslim elected to the Senate.
“They’re going after a brown Muslim today,” he recalled telling one group. “They’re gonna be coming after a Black Muslim tomorrow.”

This is the messed up part about Michigan elections
U only need more voters than the other guy and u win the state. …
This is the messed up part about Michigan elections
U only need those 4 cities and u win the state.
Grand Rapid, Detriot, nor Flint should be telling us how to live. We*ve already seen what they did to their home cities. What the heck do yall think they gonna do to the rest of the state? Michigan sleeps… 💤™️

2026 Senate: 🔵 El-Sayed +2
Swing: 🔵 Democrats +18
Abdul got 96 more raw votes than Harris here.
I wonder if my Republican aunt and uncle that live in outer Cuyahoga County voted for her 🤔 I’m pretty sure their son voted her because his girlfriend is a teacher that’s pretty active in the OEA.

Senator-elect @AbdulElSayed: I’m going to look at every Trump nominee and give them a fair shake. I’m going to assume that I won’t support you until you show me otherwise, the bar is extremely high.
Fox host: I don’t think that’s very unreasonable. I’m not sure why we played that. I think that was fine. There was nothing wrong with that. He says he’s going to give them a fair shake.

El-Sayed received more votes in Dearborn than Harris and Trump combined in 2024.
How many of the candidates that Sanders didn’t endorse have to fight for their fucking lives in their primaries?
And I mean seriously fight.
Abdul was up against 70 million in the primary and his main opponent went on to endorse the Republican.
The field doesn’t get cleared for candidates like Peggy or Abdul or Angie… they have to beat the corporations and the billionaires once in the primary and then do it all over again in the general.
It’s almost like you catch some flack from the status quo when you’re actually viewed as a threat to it.
I’d also argue that Troy, Peggy and Abdul all faced much stronger opponents than Talarico, Cooper, Andrews and Ossoff.
With the ouster of Commissioner Runberg and the election of Colton and Causley — the left bloc has netted one seat from the center, while the right bloc has maintained the same number of seats… though it will shift drastically to the right ideologically with the election of Fitzpatrick.
The Commission will certainly be getting a new Vice President as Runberg makes his departure, and only time will tell if DSA aligned Commission President Alex Dewitt will be selected again or if Establishment Dem Craig will retain his position as Sergeant at Arms.
It’s going to be very interesting to see how the dynamics of the Commission shifts with the addition of a far right Republican to a body which has been entirely left-leaning by US standards for the past two years. Interestingly enough, Runberg was actually appointed to replace the last Republican to serve on the Commission, Shelley Niedzwiecki, after her resignation in 2024. Niedzwiecki was elected by an even wider margin than Fitzpatrick in 2022.
With 5 Wards up for election this year, the balance of power on the Commission has seemingly shifted.
In the 1st, true Independent Laura Kubit was unopposed after being appointed to the seat last year. Kubit, along with Doyle, and sometimes Kokaly and Morris, finds herself voting with the DSA bloc more often than not — with Zanotti being their firmest opposition.
Kubit* (Ind): 98%
Write-In: 2%
In the 3rd, fellow appointed Independent Katie Doyle opted out of running for a full term — paving the way for DSA backed Kenzie Colton to defeat establishment Democrat Quenessa Miller. I outlined the specifics in the original post.
Colton (DSA): 73%
Miller (Dem): 26%
Write-In: 1%
In the 5th, Appointed Incumbent and former School Board President Mark Zanotti — a Conservative Democrat, went on to defeat fellow Democrat Matt Sous for the full four year term. This was the only seat with a primary this year, which was wild a five way race that included Zanotti and the more liberal Sous as well as Kelsi Myers who was quietly backed by DSA. Also on the ballot was left-leaning Independent Kim Urban and right-leaning Independent Matt Walraven.
Primary:
Zanotti (Dem): 42%
Sous (Dem): 23%
Walraven (Ind): 18%
Myers (DSA): 12%
Urban (Ind): 5%
Write-In: <1%
General:
Zanotti (Dem): 63%
Sous (Dem) 36%
Write-In: 1%
In the 7th, appointed Incumbent Chris Runberg received the backing of the DSA, but was outworked on the doors by far-right, election denying, xenophobic Republican Tom Fitzpatrick who was the only candidate with material backing from the Bay County Republicans — though both Miller and Zanotti received their endorsement, as well as Kubit and Causley (lol). Fitzpatrick ended up winning fairly handily and I’m expecting him to be a nuisance on the Commission. :(
Fitzpatrick (Rep): 67%
Runberg (DSA): 31%
Write-In: 2%
In the 9th, where I’ve lived my whole life, Incumbent Commissioner Cordal Morris — a moderate to right-leaning independent who stood alone (with Zanotti of course) in a failed 6-2 vote in support of Flock Cameras — was term limited, and replaced by his 2022 Write-In challenger and Left-leaning Independent, Jill Causley. Causley will likely find herself caucusing with the DSA Commissioners despite not being a member herself.
Causley (Ind): 97%
Write-In: 3%

Aside from Abdul winning of course… This is what I was proudest of on election night. Kenzie will make an absolutely phenomenal City Commissioner and it was a pleasure to manage her campaign.
Damn near 3-1 ratio up against a manchurian candidate backed by the Dem establishment, despite being outspent (2-1 in the first CF filing). Got more votes than the Dem nominees for Senate, AG, SOS, and State Rep. as a DSAer.
Earned the endorsement of 10 labor unions, raised more than $5k, sent 6 mailers, sent 2 GOTV texts and absolutely killed it on the doors.
Hard work pays off. Run for office. Start local. AND KNOCK YOUR FREAKIN DOORS.

Today, I’m humbled to be elected by my colleagues as Speaker of the Michigan House!
When my parents immigrated to this country, they couldn’t have imagined their son would one day make history, break barriers and lead the Michigan House. That is the promise of America.
Michiganders sent us to Lansing with a clear message: lower costs and make life more affordable for working families.
Our Majority is ready to deliver, and I look forward to working with Senate Majority Leader-Elect @darrincamilleri and Governor-Elect @JocelynBenson to get it done.
Thank you to my colleagues for your trust. Excited to get to work!
