Mariama Bâ won Africa's first major book prize in 1980, then died the next summer. She was born in Dakar in 1929 and raised Muslim. Her mother died when she was a child, and her grandparents brought her up. She became a teacher and later a school inspector, divorced, and raised nine children mostly alone. At 50 she published her first novel, Une si longue lettre ("So Long a Letter"), in 1979. The book is one long letter from Ramatoulaye, a widow in Dakar, to her friend Aissatou, who left her own marriage. It covers polygamy, widowhood, women's education and what the law gives women in marriage and what it does not. The test of a book is whether readers outside its country pick it up. In October 1980 it won the first Noma Award for Publishing in Africa, at the Frankfurt Book Fair. It has since been translated into more than a dozen languages and was named one of Africa's 100 best books of the 20th century. She did not see most of that. She was already ill, and she died of cancer on 17 August 1981, aged 52. Her second novel, Scarlet Song, came out the same year, after her death. A girls' boarding school on Gorée Island carries her name. Mariama Bâ wrote two novels. One is still on every serious list of African literature. Source: Wikipedia; BlackPast; LitCharts; Gale.

Não é o primeiro post estrangeiro que expressa espanto e admiração no tratamento tranquilo e carinhosamente brasileiro de Lula para com Erika. O Brasil está muito à frente. ♥️🇧🇷
i don't know a ton about the brazilian elections but i have to say, a politician kissing a transgender woman is such a radical act that it almost makes me tear up

You think the only support is money? If your friend is facing homelessness, you can crowdfund. Call local rental assistance charities. Call the local legal aid to get them a pro bono attorney. See if anyone in neighborhood has cheaper housing. COMMUNITY is not just money 🤷🏾‍♀️

Honestly seeing the eviction process play out has taught me to stay away from “friends”who think support is just phone calls. You’re waiting for the marshal and they’re on the line wanting a play by play. “What are you gonna do next, girl?”
that first night as a homeless person gotta be crazy

I commented on an IG post of a Nigerian making sweet plantains w/ ground beef + cheese. I said OH this is also a Dominican dish, they call it pastelon de platano maduro. Puerto Ricans RAN to the comments to inform me it’s a PUERTO RICAN dish that Dominicans happen to make 🤣🤣

This house in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra was built on a budget, 1,100 square feet, using laterite stone quarried within 10 kilometres of the site, Mangalore clay roof tiles, teak wood joinery and clearstory windows along the eastern wall that pull morning light through the entire living area. Cross ventilation through high ceilings and large openings means no mechanical cooling. Not a single tree on the site was cut during construction. This is not an expensive house. It is a disciplined one. The crude indigenous designs we have in our communities do not need to be abandoned. They need effort. When slight effort is put into laterite, into fired brick, into rammed earth, when someone takes the time to lay it properly, orient the building correctly, and open it to the right wind, the result stops looking crude and starts looking like this. The people around us cannot see how good our materials are because we have never shown them what those materials look like when they are taken seriously. Building kilns is not a fantasy. We have the clay. We have the land. We just have not decided it matters enough yet. There is no pride in crudeness and there is no excuse for mediocrity when the solution is already in the ground. Burkina Faso again, showing us how good infrastructure can be when you use local materials intelligently. The Koudougou Central Market won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. 29,000 square metres. 1,800 vendors. Primary construction material: compressed earth blocks sourced from two kilometres away. The vaulted arches were built by local enterprises with specialized earth construction expertise. The layout does two things simultaneously; maximum commercial density and maximum natural ventilation. Two overlapping grids create shade between neighboring structures while channeling cross breezes through the alleys. The market cools itself. In Burkina Faso’s extreme heat, that’s not a design gesture, it’s survival infrastructure. The deeper story is economic. Local materials meant local labour, earth extraction, brick production, vault construction, all community income. A skilled workforce was trained and retained. Demand for earth construction in the region grew long after the build ended. Then the market opened. 1,800 vendors with dignified, shaded, ventilated trading spaces. Better conditions mean longer trading hours, stable livelihoods and a neighbourhood that actually prospers. A market that works climatically is a market that works economically. 📍Koudougou Central Market, Koudougou, Burkina Faso. Laurent Séchaud / SDC.

She was the first woman to become a professor at the newly created University College of the West Indies (UCWI). One of the first historians to define "slave society" rather than "colonial society", which effectively left out enslaved Africans and free Blacks. #Jamaica #Guyana en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsa_G… youtu.be/ISyYGCDFGB0
