Part 2 - Russian diesel cargo tankers heading for New Jersey (Link to Part 1 in the comments) The geopolitical gridlock over the Russian diesel cargo tankers heading for New Jersey has officially escalated. What started as a local protest by NJ Gov. Mikie Sherrill has exploded into a massive federal legal blockade. Gov. Sherrill initiated the fight, vowing to use state countermeasures to lock down NJ docks. But now, a powerful bipartisan coalition in Congress has stepped in. They are using a wall of legal threats to completely freeze the maritime supply chain. Even though the White House issued an executive waiver (General License 135) to lower fuel prices, lawmakers say it violates federal law. A heavy hitting group including Sens. Shaheen, Tillis, Blumenthal, and Reps. Meeks and Raskin are bypassing the administration entirely. The legal threats are massive. Lawmakers sent formal notices warning port authorities, marine pilots, and tug operators that assisting these ships carries up to 20 years in prison for smuggling under 18 U.S.C. § 545, plus multi million dollar corporate fines and ship seizures. Wall Street is also in the crosshairs. Sens. Shaheen and Tillis warned major banks like JPMorgan and Bank of America that financing or clearing payments for this cargo will trigger immediate congressional probes. Sen. Blumenthal even issued a direct ultimatum to Greek shipowner EASTMED to turn their lead tanker around. The result? Total gridlock. Up to seven tankers are currently trapped at sea in European waters. Captains have wiped New Jersey from their transponders and are idling "for orders" because the cargo is legally toxic. Congress is now fast tracking bills to kill the Trump Administration issued waiver permanently.
