What he said: if you don't have a nest, please don't go into entrepreneurship... just use your money to eat suya or invest in people that have the skin for it. When we started @CitiLounge , after doing our market analysis, we knew what the market for 'food and drinks' was in the locale and we were pretty sure we didn't want our customers to be predominantly that (we knew to survive, we had to have a different SAM & SOM with the neighboring 'spots'). So what did we do? We filtered with price for the affordable drinks - beers and bitters mostly. On Mabo street at the time, there were atleast 7 beer parlors and we didn't want people that just wanted to get drunk, we were never in the business to sell drinks, we knew we wanted to sell experience & grow community but omoh, the first few weeks were tough which is the main story. I remember the first Monday of our maiden Citi Sunday, a lot of people walked in and not up to 5% of them stayed. They come in, sit, scan the menu, hiss, laugh or make snide remarks and leave... one guy said belike we just wan wash money ni because there was no way anyone will pay that much for drinks at Mabo. Thank God we were for doing it for the love of the game as at then because when I suggested reducing our prices a bit to encourage patronage, @Chydee said something in the line of "we know what we want to achieve and we are ready to be patient for it yea? So let's trust our process and if it fails, it fails" I was making good money on web3 then and other digital gigs, so I wasn't really worried per se, just didn't feel good seeing people leave. Imagine if I used Lapo money, omo, we for don go full beer parlor mode and we won't have been able to compete for long because overhead would have kill3d us. Few weeks later, we started attracting the right audience who either stayed around (before Citi, they had to go to central Surulere to get good service), or people who stayed in Central Surulere and neighboring cities who have heard of testimonies from our social media or from our day1 Citizens (I love them like mad) The downside of it is that we made a lot of financial mistakes early on because it took a while to get used to human beings devious ways but in the long run, it is worth it like mad. So, in a nutshell, leave entrepreneurship for trust fund kids (we were not 😒), or be really ready to go all in and trust yourself as long as you have done your homework before starting. Or just invest with people that have learnt from their mistakes... or just do my favorite advice, Oblee with your money and have rest of mind. Anyway, biko come to Citi Sunday tonight at the family house and I promise you, you will have a very good time. 📍 9, Mabo Street, Surulere.
