Today, the calendar makes a right triangle, for the last time this century.
This Saturday is October 24, 2026.
Write it as 10/24/26 or 24/10/26, and the same beautiful relationship appears:
10² + 24² = 26²
100 + 576 = 676
But here’s what makes today special.
There are infinitely many Pythagorean triples. Only a handful fit our calendar.
Using the rule
month² + day² = (last two digits of the year)²,
the month cannot exceed 12, and the day cannot exceed 31. Those small limits leave exactly 12 qualifying dates in this century.
Today is the last.
The next will be March 4, 2105:
3² + 4² = 5²
That is a wait of more than 78 years.
An infinite family of triangles. Just twelve appearances on a century’s calendar.
Happy Pythagorean Triple Day.
Good #quizbowl Saturday morning from home! I'll be making the drive to Upper Sandusky in a bit for an 8 team middle school event.
Today, Annie makes her NAQT debut on the playing side of the buzzer. She's played trash before, but this is her first academic set.

The Rams showed up to Australia like 2 minutes before kickoff and it’s still not the dumbest thing an NFL organization has done regarding international travel this season

I'd call this the most surprising route announcement of the year.
@Lufthansa just announced new nonstop flights between Frankfurt and... Columbus, Ohio.
It'll operate 3x weekly on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Lufthansa will receive subsidies for the route, but I can't tell how much $ they're getting.
My take: this route will be great for award space. Nothing like the NYC-CMH-FRA routing.
Idc if it's not true, I believe CMH-FRA is the result of @FreddyLA7 and his outreach.
YESSSSSSSSSS
Guten Tag, Columbus. We’ve been waiting a long time to say this...
Introducing nonstop service from Columbus to Frankfurt, Germany, with @lufthansa, launching May 5, 2027!

Through 2 rounds, 35% of tossups have been powered and 96% have been answered correctly. PPB for the field is 20.

What I witnessed yesterday made me seriously consider walking away from the club and the game I have loved for most of my life.
Many, many supporters across the country will feel exactly the same as this farce continues.
The @premierleague stands on the precipice. It must stop pretending this is just another day at the office and take urgent action now before it loses all credibility and the game we love is damaged beyond any hope of repair.
How long is the stench of the “sham” going to corrode the meaning, worth, and very essence of the Premier League?
Listening to commentary about Manchester City’s players matching the defiance of their ownership and triumphing in adversity.
Listening to fans chorusing the names of the men running the club, wearing masks or displaying banners of their faces and jibing: “We’re Man City, we’ll cheat when we want.”
Victory being framed as “a lovely moment,” a show of togetherness as though some grave injustice has been imposed on City, rather than their hierarchy being found by an independent commission to have orchestrated financial doping on an industrial scale.
Their opponents and the rest of us wondering if any of this actually matters now and how much of it ever did?
There can be no business as usual pretence. We need a full stop to the absurdity.

To be the best, you have to beat the best.
To beat the best, you have to play the best -- and that means you might be beaten by hundreds of points first.
It's sad to see a whole circuit of teams avoiding the chance to get better.
They'll play their league season and then get crushed in April and probably blame it on anything other than the fact that they didn't do the work to catch up with, then eventually overtake, the teams that are at the top already.
