Commentary in Globe Rhode Island by @RISecState, @anastatesenate2, and @JoshuaJGiraldo:
In the Rhode Island State House, outside of the Secretary of Stateās office, is a banner featuring a quote from Representative John Lewis: āThe vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society. You must use it because it is not guaranteed.ā
But despite the power of the vote as a nonviolent tool, we increasingly see violence and vitriol in our nationās politics. And, perhaps most abhorrently of all, weāve witnessed federal agents deny people their Constitutional rights and commit acts of aggression and violence against the very people they are sworn to serve and defend.
Naturally, this has created new fears ā fears that once seemed out of the realm of possibility ā of federal agents at polling places to intimidate or even prevent voters from accessing the ballot.
We cannot let this fear stop eligible voters from turning out this fall. So, weāre taking action.

Last week, Rep. Karen Alzate joined members of the @RISenate, @RISecState, @LGSabinaMatos, and others to unveil historic portraits of Martha Sayles Wilkinson (1776-1852), the great-great-great-granddaughter of Roger Williams, and her husband, Pawtucket inventor David Wilkinson (1771-1852), who was one of the fathers of both the American textile revolution and the American industrial revolution.
The portraits are estimated to have been painted around 1813. Thanks to the efforts of @LoriUrsoRI, they have returned to Rhode Island after more than two centuries out of state. They were donated to the Slater Industrial Archives in Pawtucket, and they are currently on display in the State House Library.
