Maybe if Labour did not continually put up the cost of running a business, less business’ would go out of business & less people would become unemployed.
I am deeply concerned that Poundland jobs are at risk here in constituency of #PaisleyRenfrewshireNorth in #Braehead with many constituents impacted.
Poundland has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, putting 11,000 jobs at risk across more than 600 stores and distribution centres across the UK.
I welcome PM Andy Burham's support for Poundland workers & like him, I question why the company's owners chose not to accept a viable solvent offer which @UsdawUnion say could have prevented this outcome. This situation was entirely predictable by @Poundland according to the Shop Workers Trade Union who have been monitoring the situation closely for some time.
I have reached out to parliamentary colleagues to explore what options are available to assist and I hope to meet with USDAW trade union who represent Poundland workers to discuss the local issues in more detail.
What he said when he wanted our votes.
All talk no action.
“Slash VAT & Business Rates.”
That’s the message from Andy Burnham at #NTES26
2 million UK jobs depend on hospitality - yet venues are still closing.
Europe backs its sector. The UK must too.

Who's the biggest gainer from today's budget.
NHS?
Workers?
Disabled?
Pensioners?
NO, another 10 BILLION to this grifter. 👇

Shame on you @andyburnham you claimed to understand hospitality and said you’d fight for VAT in line with Europe. More gaslighting and more obstacles for hospitality in your first budget.

Individuals who have never ran a business’s unfortunately will never understand.
They treat work like a one sided relationship.
Running a business is significantly more difficult than working a job.
This is something they cannot comprehend.
That actually hiring someone is doing that individual and the economy a massive favour.
Yet there’s very little appreciation.
Minimum wage increasing is just 1, of many pressures businesses face on a daily basis.
Running a business has been described as “learning to build a plane while flying it at the same time”
If these pressure continue, business have 2 choices.
1) Close down because they become untenable
2) Figure out how to scale without people.
Both solutions result in job losses.
Both of them for the workers who complain are a disaster.
Make it cheaper and easier to employee people and suddenly we’ll see the economy grow.
Minimum wage jobs used to mean entry level low skilled jobs that were typical associated with students. Now it is whole sectors with people in middle management being stuck on minimum wage. Forcing companies to pay staff more doesn't mean that they have more money to do so. The minimum wage is already high as is, it is causing wage compression, driving up costs and unemployment.

The pre-pandemic rate was £8.21/hour; £13.20/hour represents a more than 60% increase in five years.
People keep saying businesses who can't pay it shouldn't employ people.
So they're not.

John Healey will announce plans to increase the minimum wage by nearly 4 per cent but slow the rise for young people after warnings that they are being priced out of jobs
The Times has been told that the national living wage, which applies to those aged 21 and over, is expected to rise from £12.71 to around £13.20 — an increase of 3.9 per cent
However, Healey has decided not to repeat the big rises of the past two budgets in the national minimum wage, which applies to those aged 18 to 21
It will rise broadly in line with the rate for older workers - from £10.85 to around £11.27, an increase of 3.9 per cent
It effectively spells the end of Labour’s manifesto pledge to bring the “discriminatory” minimum wage for young people into line with the living wage for older workers in this parliament
The minimum wage increased by 26 per cent between 2025 and 2026, leading to stark warnings from employers that it risked impeding efforts to get 1 million “Neets” - young people not in education, employment or training - into work.
Healey alluded to the approach in an interview with The Times last week, in which he spoke of the importance of the “trade-off between the level of the minimum wage and the employment rate”

This increase in the NLW is yet another kick in the teeth for young people looking to enter the workforce.
Stacked on top of the 15% employer National Insurance contributions, this makes entry level workers too expensive for businesses to consider hiring.
This government seems hellbent on doing everything it can to destroy British businesses and SMEs, while locking yet more young people out of work.

What people don't realise (and presumably @andyburnham @JohnHealey_MP), is that if the minimum wage does rise to £13.20 - that actually costs the employer somewhere between £16.90–£17 per hour. That's just not possible right now. Hospitality will be destroyed.
Richie Kélly retweeted
An increase to £13.20p/h equates to a minimum wage of £27,456, based on a 40 hour week.
Once you factor in employers NI and basic pension contributions, the MINIMUM cost to hire a 21 year old for a company would be £31,461.
This is before you factor in any overarching business costs like office space, laptops, phone, software, training, support staff, vehicles etc.
This is going to be devastating to SME's who cant put together a simple 12 month budget without the goalposts being moved & their margins squeezed.
It'll also be catastrophic to youngsters opportunities because businesses will simply not be able to afford to hire them.
What's also incredible is that anything above £50,270 is seen as 'high earnings' in the UK and is taxed at 40%!
We are governed by financially and economically illiterate morons.
This will not end well.

How any Chancellor can look at the state of the economy, the job losses, struggling businesses and sectors like Hospitality, and think, let’s increase their wage bills AGAIN… is totally beyond me.
This is a deliberate demolition of small businesses.
RIP THE ECONOMY 🪦
