This is an absolutely wonderful balanced thread. Read it all if you are an academic.
Twitter is dying, and I am winding this campaign down. Some thoughts as I leave, from both my view of the public situation and all the DMs I've been sent. 1/

Fab professional service colleagues keep the sector afloat. The number of experienced PS staff we lost through 'voluntary severance' this summer is vertigo-inducing. Bracing for the even less sustainable workload. PS colleagues @QMUL: join us! Full flyer: qmucu.org/wp-content/uploads…
Today @WonkHE has published a few pieces on #AcademicWorkload and the related problems of workload in professional services staff. It is really good to see this issue get such strong attention. A short thread to raise the profile of these pieces. 1/

From the comments section: ‘There’s no redundancy, for lack of a better word, built into the system. If anyone drops the ball, everything falls apart. If I don’t pull my weight, it’s more likely someone else in the team will drop the ball’

"It’s hard to talk about workload without looking like you are admitting failure." @dkernohan on @Wonkhe absolutely hitting the nail on the head here. Essential reading on overwork in HE.

Academia’s become too volatile. I’ve been in my post for 5 years & we’ve already had 2 major crises threatening my job (covid & now this sector wide financial crisis). Precarity has become the norm. The impact it has on people’s well-being is enormous. #AcademicTwitter

If you slash international student visas you will a) slash export earnings b) slash income to towns & cities across the country which can ill afford to lose it and c) slash jobs and opportunities- already 50+ unis are making cuts to jobs and courses. thetimes.co.uk/article/fc88e…

Reminder: if your #AcademicWorkload model prescribes a certain number of work days/hours every year, then #LeapDay tomorrow means you should get an extra day off this year.

I have spent the day reading lived experience accounts of stress, burnout and mental illness to cite in the Handbook of #AcademicMentalHealth. The evidence is clear and overwhelming. We need new leaders in higher ed who have the courage to make REAL changes. @OpenAcademics

This. At a recent workload monitoring committee some managers suggested that colleagues might need performance management if they needed more than 1.5 hours to prepare a new 1 hour lecture from scratch! @AcademicChatter @RWorkloads
Just so you know, the time I have been allocated by the university workload model to write 12 new lectures is 24 hours. And in fact, I have not actually been allocated any prep time for this module (58 hours of f2f teaching including lectures, seminars, workshops) at all.

16%Yes, in the paperwork
2%Yes, before interview
14%Yes, when negotiating
67%No, not before day 1/ever
