Government owning the means of production
When the public invests in new tech, the public should benefit.
That’s why our investment in a Quantum Fabrication Lab at NYU includes a first-of-its-kind agreement to give the city seats on the board and a share of the revenue from the lab — all while making our city the quantum capital of the world.
We’re creating a new national model for economic development that gives working people a say and a stake.

Mohammed El-Fayad [sic] is an Egyptian businessman and the once-owner of Harrod's in London. Perhaps more famous is his son, Dodi, who was involved with Princess Dianna.
I tried to explain the western mass masked bar to some aunties in Syria
First question I got “so how does a mask work at a bar? How do you drink with a mask on?”
Second question “they used the term GENOCIDE??? Like in Gaza???? For real?????”
I had no answers.
idk maybe but this is the Arab Empire at peak "conformism, deference to authority" having won over both Rome and Persia
Why are Arab armies so bad?
The Saudis have been humiliated in Yemen. The Iraqis got repeatedly blown over by the Iranians and Americans. Gaddafi's Libyans were defeated by impoverished Chad. And the Israelis beat a coalition of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq in six days, among many other dazzling victories over its neighbours.
It could be their reliance on Soviet doctrine and training, which emphasised preplanned operations and top-down command. But non-Arab armies that relied on these doctrines, like Cuba's and North Korea's, don't seem to have suffered the same problems.
It could be military purges and political control, with officers promoted for loyalty over talent. But the Egyptians reformed a lot of this out of the system in the 1970s and still suffered from the same problems.
Instead, Kenneth Pollack says the problem is conformism, deference to authority, and honour cultures that are common in the Arab world.
Training operations often consist of pre-scripted manoeuvres where the winner is agreed in advance. Within Arab militaries, behave as patriarchs who lend money to staff, mediate personal disputes, and intervene in family matters, with no culture of meritocracy or risk taking.
The exceptions are often terrorist organisations like ISIS and Hezbollah, which are often much more pragmatic and meritocratic (and, in the case of ISIS, are often staffed by non-Arabs).
New at Works in Progress, @chalmermagne reviews Pollack's "Armies of Sand" and tries to understand why professional Arab militaries find it so hard to win.

This Syrian old man hid his private library in his home in the city of Damascus since the end of 2011 before escaping to Kuwait out of fear of the Assad regime, where the mere presence of a banned book could lead you to Assad's gulag and death under torture.
Today, the uncle returned to his library and completely removed the wall behind which he had hidden it, revealing valuable books that the Assad regime prohibited possessing and circulating.
Do I preemptively cancel my flight from Heathrow, take a train to Paris, and fly home from CDG?
Come on London get your act together!

Welcome to the 2026 Israeli Elections!
We have:
- An Islamist Arab party running a Zionist Jewish candidate
- A Religious Zionist Jewish party running an Arab candidate
- An anti-religious party running a religious candidate
Israeli politics in a nutshell.
I really should buy Google stock every time my mom tells me a new way she uses Gemini (always referred to in the feminine) in her day-to-day
The most fun story so far is how she used it to successfully debug her aunt’s old phone

We're done kicking the can down the road. Here's how we're fixing the city-owned section of the BQE.
Took a former terrorist to lead the country for said country to be removed from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list.
Funny how the world works at times.
