The federal drug police want to turn consumers of certain concentrated kratom-derived products into criminals while leaving traditional kratom leaf products outside the ban. Before exposing adults to arrest and prosecution, the feds owe them a scientific explanation for that distinction. reason.com/2026/10/20/the-de… via @reason
The federal government needs public health professionals, not a separate uniformed bureaucracy to employ them.

In many U.S. cities, a 20-minute car trip can take an hour or more by transit because routes are indirect, service is infrequent, or buses and trains are delayed by traffic.

If the country can go this long without a confirmed Surgeon General while its health agencies continue operating, why do we need one? And why do we still maintain the roughly 6,000-member uniformed service the Surgeon General oversees?reason.org/commentary/abolis… via @ReasonFdn

Gov. Gavin Newsom wisely vetoed AB 1383, which would've increased pension benefits for police and firefighters at a high cost to taxpayers.

Open enrollment gives families more choice and creates a path toward better public schools that attract students, respond more to parents and focus on helping every student succeed. This is a win for public schools and families. realcleareducation.com/artic…
Transit agencies need to get more creative in how they serve transit-dependent riders and adapt to today’s work and travel patterns.

Open enrollment allows students to transfer to any public school with open seats. Despite 74% of K–12 parents supporting open enrollment, 80% of public school students live in states that prevent kids from transferring to other public schools.

Should the state compel people with diabetes to take insulin, patients with hypertension to take their medications, or people with obesity to lose weight?" Nearly 80% of public school students live in states with weak or ineffective laws that block students from transferring to other public schools with open seats.

. @ReasonFdn found 55 public school divisions in Virginia charge tuition to transfer students, averaging $4,000 per transfer. Eight divisions charge over $10,000 per transfer, with public high school transfer students being charged $24,000 in Falls Church City. — @judeschwalbach

For homers, Virginia is of course circling the drain. That carries a political price for public schools that is coming due if leaders don't get in front of it.
Missouri's open enrollment policies are extremely limited, and the state allows public schools to charge fees or tuition to transfer students.
Missouri scores 36 points—a grade of F—and scoring fourth from last.
Only eleven states scored worse than Missouri.
