This small kingdom is so compact you can drive across it in just a few hours, yet its culture and landscapes leave a lasting impression. Formerly known as Swaziland, Eswatini is a landlocked kingdom nestled between South Africa and Mozambique. Home to roughly 1.2 million people, it is one of the world’s last absolute monarchies. In 2018, King Mswati III, who has ruled since 1986, officially renamed the country Eswatini, siSwati for “land of the Swazis.” The old English name was a colonial holdover that often led people to confuse the kingdom with Switzerland. Locals had always called it Eswatini. Here, culture is lived not kept behind museum glass. Every late August or early September, tens of thousands of unmarried Swazi women gather for the Umhlanga Reed Dance.
