What a week! So proud of MD-PhD Reilly Sample who defended his thesis today. Reilly has done deep genomic and mechanistic work to understand HOW anti-PD1 resistance develops in #headandneck #cancer. Could not be more proud of him - an amazing tour de force defense!! CONGRATS!

1. When you write something intended to be read by an important person, go through it and cut every unnecessary word.
2. The reader of anything you publish is an important person.

Thank you, Mike, for sharing this announcement about Susan’s election to the National Academy of Sciences. She is an outstanding scientist, a valued colleague, and an asset to our exceptional Genetics department here at WashU. I am lucky to have her as my office and lab neighbor, she makes the department an even better place. Congratulations Susan! @WashUGenetics #genetics
I am a couple of days late, but a huge congrats to our own @WashUGenetics Susan Dutcher on her election to the National Academy of Sciences!

Highly speculative post: Autoimmune diseases have benefitted from a repurposing of modalities from blood malignancies. Imo, once we find the immune cell subpopulations driving age-related diseases, we'll see repurposing from autoimmune -> aging

And, perhaps the hardest of it all, the Courage to stare Nature in its face, unyielding and impersonal as it is, armed only with rudimentary tools.
It is this unyielding, cruel quality of Nature that taught me the most important lesson of all: Humility.

She became an HHMI investigator in her mid-30s and was the first out gay investigator. She personally lobbied Thomas Cech, the President of HHMI at the time, to extend healthcare benefits to same-sex partners of investigators.

Appraising the scientific literature for its quality, reliability and trustworthiness should be seen as much of a science as, and given as much credence as, the science being appraised.

Science is hard for two big reasons: 1. the unfair aspects - the misconduct & the many biases; and 2. the built-in uncertainty involved in scientific discovery. We must eliminate the first! But all we can do about the second is raise awareness that the process is unpredictable.
