"I don't know" is not an acceptable answer when it comes to keeping 3.8 million people safe.
NEW: Who is an example of a police chief that Nithya Raman really respects or admires? "I don't know...I don't know." Raman is now apologizing for her recent debate remarks that LAPD Chief Daryl Gates was a "gold standard" for his handling of immigration. Critics accuse Gates of racist policies. "It was a mistake to reference his name at all. I was trying to make a point and I fumbled that point. That point was not to praise Daryl Gates in any shape or form. I sincerely apologize for mentioning his name. I know it causes real pain for so many people across Los Angeles and I shouldn't have said it." Raman has said she wants to dismiss current LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell but has not floated any names of potential replacements. We'll have a lot more with Raman coming soon on @CNNTheStoryIs

Anyone who holds up Daryl Gates as the gold standard of policing is willfully ignorant of LA’s history and the reign of terror he waged on Black and Brown communities for decades. Being mayor means doing your homework and knowing the dark chapters of our past that we shouldn’t repeat.
Nithya Raman declared Daryl Gates “the gold standard” hmmm… In 1982, Gates said that "blacks might be more likely to die from chokeholds because their arteries do not open as fast as they do in 'normal people'". This comment led to calls by the Urban League for his suspension.

New poll from @BSPresearch + @realMABarreto, one of our state's most respected pollsters, shows @KarenBassLA leading among Latino voters and showing real momentum heading into the final weeks of the campaign: 🟦 Bass: 45% 🟥 Raman: 32%

Just yesterday, Latino Community Foundation showed @KarenBassLA with strong support in Latino community. Still 41 days left in the campaign - time to do the work
It’s a respected poll but I don’t believe 66% Raman to 4% Bass with younger voters. Not in real world. Private polling is more like Raman 40, Bass 37… but no doubt Raman has now moved into a (narrow) lead. latimes.com/california/story…

Looking ahead to November, I am proudly endorsing Richard Barrera for SPI. Richard is qualified, shares my values, and has spent his career fighting for public education. He is the candidate who will stand up to and defeat the dangerous, extremist ideology of Sonja Shaw. The stakes in November could not be higher, and I will work hard to make sure Richard has the support he needs to win.

The shooting today at the Islamic Center of San Diego is tragic and appalling. There is no place in our society for gun violence — especially at a school and place of worship. My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Muslim community in San Diego. nbcsandiego.com/news/local/s…

Notable in this PPIC poll: @RendonAnthony is the only candidate with double-digit support among Dem voters (15%) — suggesting his ballot designation and message resonate most with Ds likely to turn out in the primary.
🆕 #PPICsurvey: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ may be the best way to describe likely voters’ feelings about the race for state superintendent of public instruction. None of the 10 candidates has 10% support from likely voters, while 32% are undecided. Full report ➡️ bit.ly/4sxQ8h2

I urge the Governor and legislative leaders to heed education advocates and provide the resources our children need for a world-class education.  This crisis also underscores California's need for greater independence from federal funding. We must create a fairer revenue system where wealthy individuals and corporations pay their fair share. That's why I strongly support extending Prop 30/Prop 55 taxes on high earners and reforming Prop 13 to close the corporate property tax loophole while continuing to protect California families and small businesses.

The Governor has no idea who you are
Overheard in Sacramento: "Newsom is terrified that Sonja is going to win." His desperate proposal to strip the State Superintendent's powers proves it. But we won't allow him to succeed. Parents are done with career politicians harming our kids.

Rob Reiner’s brilliance on the big screen was matched by his fierce advocacy for California’s children — including the creation of @First5CA and fighting for universal preschool. He will be missed.
Rob Reiner, who directed such beloved Hollywood classics as 'This Is Spinal Tap,' 'Stand by Me' and 'When Harry Met Sally' after starring in the trailblazing sitcom 'All in the Family,' died Sunday along with his wife, Michele, in their Brentwood home.
