This El Niño comes on the top of an already heating planet. In cities already struggling with heat, its effects can reach inside homes, workplaces, schools and hospitals. But cities can prepare. Read on 👉 bit.ly/3WgzGaP #WorldCitiesDay #EarlyWarningForAll

#Bangkok’s 50 districts declared #DisasterZones. #MinBuri, Khlong #SamWa worst-hit. Northern runoff overwhelmed #PrawetBurirom canal causing knee-high flooding across #OnNut. TMD warns heavy downpours thru Sept 27 raising #flashflood risks. This low basin always bears the brunt!
Bangkok Declares All 50 Districts Disaster Zones After Record Rainfall Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has declared all 50 districts disaster-affected areas after nearly 48 hours of continuous rain caused widespread flooding and traffic disruption. Around 30 million cubic metres of water accumulated across the capital, with rainfall reaching 274.5 mm in Min Buri and 273 mm in Khlong Sam Wa. Additional water also flowed into Bangkok from Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani. Authorities are operating pumps at a combined capacity of 1,200 cubic metres per second and distributing one million sandbags. Unaffected Bangkok schools are being opened as temporary shelters, while assistance is being prioritized for vulnerable residents, including bedridden patients. Officials said water levels in major canals were beginning to stabilize and could improve within six hours if no further rain falls. Residents have been advised to stay home and avoid flooded roads, particularly in Ramkhamhaeng, New Phetchaburi, Ekkamai, Sena Nikhom 1, King Kaeo, and Lat Krabang. Disaster risk can be sudden or everyday. ⚡ Intensive risk: High-impact, lower-frequency events cause sudden, catastrophic losses. 🌧️ Extensive risk: Frequent, lower-impact (eg. floods, storms, droughts) – impacts accumulate. Both must be reduced➡️ ow.ly/77lF50Y5jPC

An El Niño will likely arrive later in the year, according to sea level data from Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich. The satellite—which measures the height of the entire ocean every 10 days—captured a swell of warm water hundreds of miles wide in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America.

2026 and 1997 are El Niño twins. But they didn't always look alike. Subsurface ocean warmth developed faster in 1997, but 2026 caught up following a record-breaking Kelvin wave that formed in April. A new westerly wind burst into June will keep these two years neck and neck.
