Really? Police are expected to be responsible for climate change now too?
Those most at risk from extreme weather events are often the most vulnerable in society, but a new campaign by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction is urging emergency services including #police to take preventative steps to ensure those in vulnerable groups do not fall victim to ‘natural disasters’, as Policing Insight’s Andrew Staniforth reports.

Last year we raised $5,530.00 for the @WoundWarriorCA Ride for Mental Health. If we do it again, that would mean $5,530.00 for @CanadaBTB too! We can do this! No amount is too small! You can sponsor my ride here: woundedwarriorscanada.akarai…

It is critically important to recognize police service members who have died by suicide, or #BecauseOfTheLineOfDuty, to ensure we remember and recognize the contributions and sacrifices they and their families made in life to the communities they served, and carry their legacies forward with respect, compassion, and fairness. This includes the risks they took to their own mental health and well-being, their own physical safety, and the toll it took on them, took, and continues to take, every day, on their families as survivors.
I was humbled to gather with police services from across Ontario yesterday during the inaugural Ontario Police Suicide Memorial ceremony, which was organized by @CanadaBTB and featured a Silent March and a tribute to fallen officers.
No one was meant to fight through adversity alone. First responders can access confidential, anonymous peer support 24/7 @BootsOTGround. Police members & families can access support at @CanadaBTB @BadgeLifeCanada @WoundWarriorCA. If in crisis, call the Suicide Crisis Hotline at 9-8-8 or in an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Our organization had the honour of attending an incredibly significant event organized by Canada Beyond the Blue, with the support of the Police Association of Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police Association, and the Toronto Police Association.
We gathered to commemorate our fellow officers who have tragically lost their lives to suicide because of the line of duty. These brave individuals deserve a formal memorial that not only acknowledges the impact they had during their service but also legitimizes the grief felt by those they left behind. The constant exposure to trauma in our line of work can take a severe toll on mental health.
Special thanks to Dilnaz Garda for her dedication, commitment and advocacy. And to @PresidentPAO, John Cerasuolo @OPPAssociation, @TPAReid, @TpaGrande, @RickRobsonLPA, @OPPCommissioner, and @TPSMyronDemkiw, for their leadership.

Today was a historic day in Canadian policing. I was proud to be part of the Inaugural Ontario Police Suicide Memorial where we broke the silence to remember and honour 51 Ontario civilian and sworn members who have died by suicide because of the line of duty.
We must continue our important work to ensure that all members understand that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
A special thank you to @CanadaBTB President Dilnaz Garda. This memorial was made possible through her tireless efforts to raise awareness and ensure that these members are honoured with dignity and that their families understand that we are all here to support them.
Today, at the first inaugural Ontario Police Suicide Memorial, we honoured the brave men and women whose lives were lost to mental illness and remember how they served our communities with unwavering dedication and courage yet struggled with battles too often unseen.
This memorial recognizes their service and combats the stigma of suicide. While progress has been made, the fight against stigma continues, and we must keep pushing for preventive measures and support for our members.
Organized by @CanadaBTB and supported by our members, fellow police associations, and leaders, this memorial is a commitment to the families, friends, and colleagues of the lost police officers that their loved ones and their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Important research that police associations need to be aware of:
I didn't know much about "cop-baiting" until I read the brief written by @DrLauraHuey and @LFrgsn that is published in the first issue of appliedpolicebriefings.com. The title of the brief is, The Growing Problem of ‘Cop-Baiting’ by the Public. 1/n
This risk can’t be overstated. It is massive. We aren’t doctors. Even with all technology & skill modern medicine has to offer sometimes the only option is to observe and respond. It is unbelievable that we download this to police officers, cadets or sometimes even volunteers.
Prisoner care and control is a high risk activity, especially with drugs like Fentanyl. This technology helps ensure safety of those in custody, while protecting the wellbeing of our @SarniaPolice officers who provide prisoner care and control services.
