Excited to share our new paper with @StanleyHeinze and Julian Kempenaers @LundVision in @CurrentBiology showing path integration in walking bumblebees in the lab! This vector navigation behavior is highly amenable and remarkably stable to anesthetization and surgery. @MSCActions

Fresh off the press! Our new study @PNAS shows that bees memorize spatial vectors and can flexibly recall them at a familiar place to navigate home. The work provides a plausible foundation for how bees might achieve complex navigation by utilizing vectors to form a web-like map

Mantis shrimp rely on vision to detect landmarks and other animals, among other tasks. What do mantis shrimp pay attention to when recognizing an object? Now in JEB, eight @UMBCBiology undergrads and I investigated if mantis shrimp recognize objects by their colors and/or shapes!

now with video! the neural subnetworks you see in this behaving animal are a new discovery and a big clue about how these distributed, growing nerve nets wire up and function. Powerful transgenic neuroscience tools open the door for lots of new biology! congrats to Brady et al.!
my brilliant collaborator Brady Weissbourd just posted this. they made GCaMP jellyfish and can now image neural activity across entire, live animals in response to stimuli. we always wonder, "what's that jelly thinking rn?" and Brady's gonna find out! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
