RIP Patrick Stewart. What an actor. I still can’t believe he agreed to do this scene. And he didn’t even mind when I ruined every take. Legend.

One of my favorite brushes with greatness. December '16 and I told @sirpatstew his crazed, self-destructive cable political host in "Blunt Talk" was PERFECT (and I should know). He quizzed me for half an hour as prep for a 2nd season that sadly never came
A lovely funny man #RIP

CDC is aware of and closely monitoring reports of a suspected case of pneumonic plague in the Irkutsk region of Russia that resulted in a death. We are working across the U.S. government to assess developments as additional information becomes available.
While the circumstances of this reported case remain unconfirmed, plague is a serious bacterial disease that is treatable with antibiotics, particularly when recognized and treated early.
Pneumonic plague can spread person-to-person through respiratory droplets during close contact, which is why rapid identification and treatment of infected individuals, and monitoring of potentially exposed individuals, are important public health measures.
At this time, there is no indication of a broader threat to the United States, but CDC and our interagency partners are prepared and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

☣️Russia’s new denial—*no plague detected; no laboratory accident; pneumonia is of unknown etiology; situation is stable*—is impossible to square w/its initial emergency response, which included FSB.
Further, Rospotrebnadzor chief (equivalent of HHS + CDC +/- DHS) initially flew to Irkutsk to convene an extraordinary anti-epidemic commission over a “particularly dangerous infectious disease,” reported to be pneumonic plague.

It’s true that no one has a right to report “fake” news. If something is intentionally inaccurate, a plaintiff can prove libel or slander in court.
That’s not what’s happening here. There’s no specific case being presented.
Officials can’t discriminate against journalists simply because they don’t like their point of view.
Every time authorities have tried to do so called “viewpoint discrimination,” they’ve lost in court.
Often in the past, journalists themselves have stood in solidarity to defend their colleagues’ press freedoms.
In 2009, the Obama Administration tried to exclude FOX News from a pool interview. The other networks refused to participate unless they were included.
One day later, the Obama team changed course.
It’ll be interesting to see how FOX and other outlets respond this time around after CNN, MSNow and POLITCO were “banned” from the White House grounds.
The media ecosystem is obviously very different now than in 2009.
But the dangerous thing about “viewpoint discrimination” is it could break both ways.
If this is allowed to stand, what’s to stop a potential future Democratic Administration from banning the Wall Street Journal, FOX News, etc.?
That would be a terrible thing too.
Accountability for our public officials from both sides is a good thing.
Tough questions from a watchful eye prevents corruption and encourages competence.
This isn’t a partisan perspective. It’s a principle so important to America’s founding, that’s it’s written into the 1st Amendment of the Constitution.
