Steve Witkoff’s salute of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “humanitarian” on Wednesday shocked Ukraine and its supporters, but didn’t surprise close watchers of Witkoff’s handling of the Russia file. The praise, heard around the world, wasn’t a departure for the U.S. special envoy, as President Trump has sought to foster warmer relations with Putin in an effort to defuse the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv and develop economic ties with Russia. Witkoff’s remarks were made after he arrived in Russia to secure the release of Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American citizen who was living in eastern Ukraine when he was detained by the Russians soon after they invaded their neighbor in 2022. The U.S. State Department designed Hubbard as wrongfully detained and denied Russian claims that Hubbard has been a mercenary. Read more: 🔗 on.wsj.com/48dwdfD

Prevailing sentiment among many (but not all) current GOP members of Congress But Trump admin is so far shrugging off these criticisms as they try to revamp peace talks
Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

“Nevertheless, shifts on economic issues, the prospect of partial sanctions relief and the desire to keep Trump satisfied have given Putin sufficient grounds to agree to resume negotiations, particularly as doing so comes at little cost to Moscow.”
Putin agreed to resume trilateral talks on a settlement in Ukraine. This is so far the main outcome of Steve Witkoff’s trip to St. Petersburg. The last meeting between Russian, Ukrainian and American representatives took place in February, and even then, Moscow viewed the process less as a genuine attempt to resolve the conflict than as a tactical exercise, albeit one accompanied by substantive technical discussions on the modalities of a ceasefire. The talks were supposed to resume following Witkoff and Kushner’s visits to Moscow and Kyiv in September. However, Zelensky’s decision to focus on pressuring Moscow into concessions, which led to intensified strikes during the voting days, instead convinced Putin that Russia should harden its position. Moscow signalled that it now wanted not only the entirety of Donbas and the other annexed territories, but was also prepared to fight to establish a buffer zone beyond them. This was not a new position, but Russian officials have long adjusted how firmly they articulate their demands depending on the circumstances. The resumption of talks thus became another card to play. Judging by Ushakov’s rhetoric, the Americans’ “new proposals” offer little reason for optimism and have failed to generate much enthusiasm in Moscow. Nevertheless, shifts on economic issues, the prospect of partial sanctions relief and the desire to keep Trump satisfied have given Putin sufficient grounds to agree to resume negotiations, particularly as doing so comes at little cost to Moscow. All the latest statements and signals suggest that Moscow does not currently see an acceptable, or even remotely satisfactory, offer on the table. Yet it is prepared to engage in discussions for tactical gains, calculating that these, combined with the further deterioration of the Ukrainian state, may eventually produce a strategic shift in Russia’s favour.

A concerning moment for freedom of the press in Serbia, right before elections. A free and independent press should be non-negotiable in any democracy.
10 journalists from Serbia's N1 resigned today. The channel was for a long time the only TV channel that issued reports critical of the government. In May, its parent company was sold to to Luxembourg-based European Future Media Investments, managed by Alpac Capital. (After Alpac bought Euronews in 2022, reporters from Direkt36 and Le Monde showed that the acquisition was partly financed by Hungarian state capital and companies connected to the political network of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.) But back to the resignations. Here's an excerpt of the letter the 10 journalists sent to their management, which was shared with me: "Under the new management, we have witnessed falsehoods, manipulation, insidious censorship, the public discrediting of colleagues, their professional marginalisation, insults and humiliation, changes to programme editors, and a refusal to engage in open discussions about the problems. While genuine dialogue within the newsroom has been eliminated, the illusion of dialogue is being created on air. We do not want to take part in misleading our audience through the simulation of debates, the forced presentation of opposing political actors as equivalent, and the staging of normality while disregarding the authorities’ long-standing and well-documented treatment of N1, as well as the broader social and political context in which we live and work. Precisely because Serbia is facing the most unpredictable elections since N1 was established, we refuse, under these circumstances, to lend legitimacy to an editorial policy we cannot stand behind. The new management has restricted our scope for action to such an extent that our remaining at N1 would have no impact on what its programming looks like in the days ahead."

NEW: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tells @kilmeade he would accept a peace deal that freezes the war along the current frontlines, calling it a realistic way to stop the fighting. He says Ukraine would then seek security guarantees from President Trump and European allies to ensure peace and security. "We call it ceasefire or stop killing like President Trump called it. Freeze and stop. And of course this is minimum what we need from Russia today." | @foxandfriends
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Zelenskyy has made similar public statements supporting a freeze along current frontlines in prior interviews, e.g. Sky News June 2026 and Axios September 2025. euromaidanpress.com/2026/06/08/fre… pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2025/… euronews.com/2025/10/23/fre…

Reporter (@RobbieGramer): Do you expect Foreign Minister Lavrov to attend the G20 summit or the Foreign Ministers’ Summit in Atlanta? Rubio: “Well, the Russians are invited to be part of the G20. The president made that decision, so obviously, they’re going to be represented at each of these summits. I don’t know if he himself will be attending, but I expect he might. I think he told us that the last time we engaged with them. So, they’re part of the G20, and they’ll be at that meeting. I know, obviously, there’s also the possibility that Putin might attend the one in Miami, although we don’t have confirmation on that.”
