Most tax calculators tell you how much tax you pay *now*. Ours also shows how much tax you'll pay on your next £1. Your marginal rate.
We'll be publishing straight after the Budget. But here's a preview - I'd love to get feedback.

There was a chap at Oxford who came up in the 80s to research the 4 year tenure of a Yorkshire bishop. He spent 40 years on it, draining an inheritance left on condition it was spent on his education. Daily Mass (sometimes several times a day), lobster every day at Brown's next to the Oratory (hence the gout), magnificent dinner parties for miscreants, oddballs and grad students, and generous to charity. His fingers were so fat that his signet rings appeared stuck to them. Having spent every last penny, he was evicted from his apartment and became a monk some 3 years ago. No wife, no kids, and I don't think the DPhil ever got finished.
Top 5 most eccentric human beings I’ve met in my life. Bless him.

HMRC does not have a general free-standing power to demand a complete list of all your assets (or a full statement of assets and liabilities) outside checking your tax position under formal information powers, or in specific enquiry/settlement scenarios. However, if you fail to provide this information voluntarily, an enquiry would not be surprising. It’s quite inappropriate.

There is this conviction at the treasury that there is a massive hidden stash of cash being hoarded by sole traders and small businesses, and if they could only shake them down hard enough it would pay for infinity welfare.

Why do people serving in shops, cafes nowadays often add "today" onto their questions? eg. "Would you like milk, today?". How does the word "today" help? Isn't it obvious that if I want milk I'd like it "today"? How would they respond if I said "No, I'd like it a week on Tuesday please."

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if hundreds of Mearsheimer’s acolytes, western Valdai Club attendees, Kremlin lackies, Quisling Institute no marks, faux Oxford intellectuals, and foreign policy ‘realists’ cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced

Thoughts and prayers with the New Statesman. There has clearly been a horrible accident at their offices, where everyone involved in the magazine has sustained severe brain damage.
The replies are funny though.
Owen Jones has, for the last three years, revealed himself to be a man of enormous courage, integrity and truthfulness. No one should think for a minute that his relentless defence of Palestinian rights and historical truth is easy or comes without heavy personal costs. Throughout the genocide in Gaza, Jones remained a tireless bur rigorous and supremely decent voice. I suspect part of what initially moved him was the strong displeasure in being treated like an idiot by the official propaganda – a noble motive in itself – but there is no question he has been genuinely touched by the images of suffering arriving daily from Gaza. And yet, how does his intellectual fixation on a battle between left and right help us understand the horrors of Gaza, or move us to stop them? My impression is that the opposite has happened. People look at what is happening in Gaza and ask themselves what a person on the right or on the left should think. In many cases this is ideology. In most, simply careerism and group association. Jones shows how limited the perspective really is. How about, like the author himself, asking how a human being should feel? How about returning to the world of facts and feelings rather than our endless Marvel franchise? newstatesman.com/culture/boo…
