🕯️ REMEMBER TSHEPO MATLOHA.... NEVER FORGOTTEN
On 25 March 2001, Tshepo Matloha, a 17-year-old Black boy from Limpopo, went onto Inderheken game farm near Dendron to hunt small animals with his dogs. He was unarmed.
What followed was a horrific act of violence.
Nine members of the Noordelikes Rugby Club confronted him. According to the case record, Tshepo was beaten, kicked and trampled. His body was later removed from the farm and dumped in the Arabie Dam. His dogs were shot.
Nine men were arrested on charges including murder, attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice and malicious damage to property. Four later had their charges withdrawn, two were acquitted, while Riaan Botha and Ben Korff were convicted of murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Tshepo was only 17 years old.
He had a life ahead of him. Dreams. Family. A future that was taken away.
His name must not disappear into the pages of history.
Tshepo Matloha was not just a statistic. He was a human being. A son. A young South African whose life mattered.
Whatever our race, politics or background, we must never become so accustomed to violence that we forget the names of those who were lost.
