I said here last week that the deaths of elephants in Amboseli were caused by Giant Star Grass. At the time, some people dismissed the idea, laughed at it, and questioned the claim quite strongly. This evening, Governor Ole Lenku said the same thing and confirmed that the specific emurua grass was the cause. He has explained that it can sometimes form cyanogenic compounds that can poison and even kill elephants, and that some scientists have also confirmed this possibility. This is exactly what I told you here. I’m curious to see how the conversation develops from here. And what they say. One thing this experience has reminded me of is that many of us are too quick to dismiss ideas we haven’t had the opportunity to properly research or understand, just because of emotions. By the time I made that tweet, I had already done quite a bit of research. I had read papers from different African countries, studied the available evidence, and even mapped out patterns that I felt were worth considering. I wasn’t making a random guess. There was research behind what I was saying. So, for now, I’ll simply say: I’m vindicated.
