It is a career change, and almost nobody gets trained for it.
@RyanMurphyTech spent 20 years in engineering, five of them as an EM at Yelp. He ran the teams that took customer money and reported it to Wall Street. He left to train managers, because he has never met one who was trained anywhere outside their own company.
The IC ladder still goes up. Tech lead, staff, principal, distinguished. Take it if what you want is up.
Management is a separate ladder, and you start at the bottom of it.
None of the skills that got you here carry over. The difference is that your mistakes now land on someone else's career.
The most common one is delay. You notice a signal, you tell yourself it will resolve itself in two weeks, and you say nothing for two months.
Ryan has sat through a lot of PIPs that began as a conversation nobody had in time. Delaying it is not the optimal version.

Can't believe the moment has come - just dropped 23 courses on @dometrain covering all Gang of Four design pattern! Properly knowing the GoF patterns will likely change the way you think about software forever. Can't wait for you to watch it!

Teamwork is not just a buzzword.
If I had to choose only one area to invest my L&D budget, Iโd focus on creating high-performing teams.
Iโd gladly drop all leadership training, as long as those leaders, together with their teams, learn how to be a great team.
