Midnight, the fourth generation of blockchain, focuses on rational privacy.
#Midnight uses zero-knowledge proofs to validate transactions without revealing their content. Sensitive data remains exclusively on the user's device and is never uploaded to the network. With Midnight's privacy model, sensitive user data remains solely on their device, with only hashes on the chain. The blockchain only records a mathematical proof that the transaction is legitimate, allowing the user to maintain full control of their information and decide who to grant access to using view keys.

Key features of Midnight:
1. Shared Security and Interoperability
Midnight is a sidechain of Cardano and leverages Cardano's infrastructure to also be a secure blockchain:
A. Stake Pool Operators (SPOs): The same operators who validate transactions on Cardano can run Midnight nodes. This allows Midnight to inherit Cardano's decentralization from day one.
B. Double Rewards: Validators can earn both ADA (on Cardano) and NIGHT (Midnight's token) simultaneously.
C. Native Bridge: Assets and data can flow between both chains without the need for insecure third-party "bridges."
Important Note: Midnight uses Cardano's security protocol but remains an independent blockchain that also acts as a Layer 2 for other blockchains.
2. The Dual Token System: NIGHT and DUST
$NIGHT: This is the utility token. It is unprotected, meaning that all NIGHT transactions are public and transparent, just like BTC, Cardano, ETH, and others. This is easy to understand.
$DUST: This is not a token that can be bought or traded. It is a protected resource that is continuously generated by holding NIGHT. It is important to note that DUST is a renewable resource (it decays if separated from NIGHT), meaning that DUST has an expiration date or loses value if you try to accumulate it outside the control of the user who owns the original NIGHT.
Note: Midnight allows us to conduct transactions without revealing financial metadata, under the concept of Selective Privacy (you decide what data to share).
3. Token Types in Midnight
Midnight allows you to create tokens using both the UTXO ledger model, like Bitcoin, and contract account tokens, like Ethereum. Following this same line of thought, Midnight has four types of tokens:
1. Contract Account / Transparent
2. Contract Account / Private
3. Ledger UTXO / Transparent
4. Ledger UTXO / Private
This is a very important point: any developer from another blockchain can create something amazing on Midnight!

The Hot Topic: Nightframes
1/ Smart contracts are public by design. Great for trust, bad for anything private, like an agent's trading strategy.

Generate DUST on Midnight mainnet — right before you need it.
DUST is what pays for Midnight transactions, and it comes from the NIGHT you already hold. Once your NIGHT is registered to a DUST address, it generates up to 5 DUST per NIGHT.
In the 1AM wallet:
1. Create or restore a wallet, check your NIGHT is there, and keep a little ADA aside for the registration fee.
2. Tap Generate DUST and sign. That registration switches generation on.
3. Let it build. The first DUST can take up to ~12 hours to appear — so register ahead of the moment you plan to transact, not at it.
Your NIGHT is never locked and never has to move.
One caution: treat this as a test of the mechanism, not a new home for your stack. Try it with a fresh wallet and a small amount first.

Binance's initial investigation suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. We have found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. We will share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified.
The estimated total impact sits at around $6.3B. We have worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with ~$3 billion frozen on-chain so far.
Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe. We will also publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation is complete.
As an immediate precaution, Binance has:
- temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks are completed;
- revoked the affected address authorisation;
- engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds.
Our teams are working around the clock to resolve this issue safely and thoroughly. We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice.

@IOHK_Charles called Midnight a "VPN for DeFi." Here's what that means in practice, and where Midnight Passport fits.
What he said (Bonnie Blockchain interview, 20 Oct):
"you click the button in your wallet, go through Midnight, do your DeFi on SOL, ETH, or ADA, and from their perspective it's Midnight doing that TX on your behalf."
Midnight's president @F_ZK_Now used the same line a week earlier: "Midnight is the VPN for DeFi."
The VPN part: a VPN doesn't stop a website seeing a visit. It stops it seeing that the visit came from you. Same idea here.
How it works (Nightmode, built with @Sig_Network):
- A Midnight contract gets its own account on Ethereum
- A threshold of independent signers signs only what that contract asks for. No single signer can act alone
- Nothing is bridged or wrapped. The assets stay on Ethereum
- Ethereum sees one account swapping on Uniswap or lending on Aave. Amounts and timing stay public. Who is behind each trade stays shielded on Midnight
It's live on @MidnightNtwrk's stagenet today. EVM NightMode is on the roadmap for Q4 2026.
Where Passport fits, in my reading: Charles's "button in your wallet" needs an account normal people can use. Midnight Passport is Midnight's identity and wallet layer. Per its draft spec:
- No seed phrase. You open the account with a passkey
- Apps and AI agents get grants, not your keys: spend caps, one token, an expiry, an optional fixed recipient
- The account contract checks those limits on every call, and grants can be revoked
- Users never need to hold DUST. A sponsor pays the fees, or they swap for them
Honest note: Passport is still at spec stage. The SDK repo says development restarted on 15 Oct and no package exists yet. Passport SDK v1 is on the roadmap for Q4 2026, Passport v2 for Q1 2027.

Deep dive on the line from @MidnightNtwrk's roadmap I care about most as a builder: a Midnight MCP, due Q1 2027.
The problem first. Ask a general AI assistant for a Compact contract and it guesses. Midnight's own docs say Compact and the Midnight SDK are barely in AI training data, so assistants invent syntax and call functions that don't exist.
Compact also moves fast. The language went from version 0.22 in March to 0.27 in September. In March, NativePoint was renamed JubjubPoint, and code using the old name stopped compiling. An AI that learned from older examples keeps writing it.
What you can use today:
- Midnight Expert: Claude Code plugins from Midnight that write and review Compact, then check it against the real compiler
- Kapa MCP: answers grounded in Midnight's docs, inside your editor
- midnight-mcp: a community MCP server by Idris Olubisi that also checks code against the compiler
My stack right now: Claude Code + Midnight Expert + the Kapa MCP.
What's coming:
- Q4 2026: AI DevEx for builders, AI tools that understand Compact and help write and debug contracts
- Q1 2027: a production Midnight MCP, plus AI agents trained on Midnight
MCP is a standard way for AI tools to connect to outside systems. Midnight Expert is built for Claude Code today. The roadmap says the production MCP will let assistants like Claude Code and Cursor build, test and deploy Midnight apps with accurate, current knowledge.
