In my capacity as Co-owner of an investment company SCM Direct, we wrote to Rachel reeves about a mandatory investment rule for pension funds, so very pleased she is looking at this.
An approach that would significantly increase capital inflow into UK listed equities without imposing additional costs on the government, and turbo boost investment in UK companies and infrastructure.
The weighted average proportion of pension fund equities invested in UK quoted stocks has fallen to 7.6% in 2023 as compared to 48.2% in 2008.
A mandated minimum UK equity exposure of 20% of the overall equity exposure within pensions (lower than in Canada) , would direct c. £41.6bn into UK equities.
The cost to HMRC would be minimal and could lead to increased tax revenues by preventing capital flight and encouraging economic growth
- a no brainer!
PS - MPs own pension fund have just 2.8% invested in UK listed companies, so that would be a good place to start.
