A country's investment ambitions need financing. Where does the money come from?
IMF data for 2016โ2025 tell a clear story:
๐ฟ๐ฒ Zambia: national savings averaged 35.2% of GDP, broadly matching investment at 34.3%.
๐ฒ๐ผ Malawi: savings averaged โ4.1%, while investment averaged 9.8%.
Malawi's investmentโsaving gap means greater reliance on foreign capital โ often on terms it cannot control.

Trapped cash: when earning interest means losing money.
A multinational's cash may be earning interest in Malawi or Mozambique, yet lose purchasing power to inflation.
It cannot fund better opportunities elsewhere. Investing locally may add risk. Locking it into deposits sacrifices liquidity.
The challenge is to balance return, liquidity and FX exposure while preserving the option to transfer funds when an opportunity arises.
Capital controls don't just trap money. They risk trapping future investment, too.

๐ง [WATCH] | N2 CORRIDOR CONSTRUCTION
The machinery being used to construct the N2 from Ermelo towards the KwaZulu-Natal border represents a new level of road construction technology.
Imported from Germany, the specialised machinery has the capacity to lay approximately 350 metres of concrete road per day.
The project uses a different approach to road construction, incorporating reinforcement bars and concrete to create a stronger and more durable pavement.
The concrete road is designed to provide long-term durability, with an expected lifespan of up to 30 years with minimal maintenance, while being strong enough to withstand the heavy loads carried by freight vehicles along this important corridor.
A stronger N2 means safer roads, better freight movement and stronger economic activity.

Harare "born" today 136 years ago. On 12 September, 1890, British soldiers dispatched from Cape Town arrived at a spot along the Hunyani River in what will be Zimbabwe. They liked the location, raised the British flag, and claimed the territory in the name of the Queen of England, while the Zezuru clan of the Shona people living there wondered what they were doing. The fort they established developed into a town called Salisbury, and then a city, named Harare.
