SEP national secretary Chris Marsden told the World Socialist Web Site, “The stand taken in defence of our comrade Bogdan by the Stop the War Coalition and the anti-war movement in Britain is of immense significance... "Bringing the Ukraine war to an end, just as halting the genocidal assault on the Palestinians, therefore demands an implacable struggle against Britain’s own government of war criminals. Securing the freedom of anti-war socialist Bogdan Syrotiuk will register a powerful blow in this life-and-death conflict.” wsws.org/en/articles/2026/08…

A rally and march was held in East London on Sunday to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. Members of the Socialist Equality Party attended to speak with workers and young people about the persecution of anti-war socialist Bogdan Syrotiuk by the far-right government in Ukraine.

Nigel, who travelled from Oxford to attend the event, told the SEP, “It’s essential to support political prisoners, especially those who take an anti-militarist stand and an anti-imperialist stand in the proxy war in Ukraine and its regions.”

The Stop the War Coalition has responded to the Socialist Equality Party's request to defend our comrade, Bogdan Syrotiuk. Their statement notes that he was "sentenced to 15 years imprisonment" on "charges of 'high treason' under martial law for opposing NATO and for calling for solidarity with Ukrainian and Russian workers." They add that "The same charge of support for the Russian government has been levelled against all opponents of NATO’s proxy war in Ukraine, including Stop the War." Every day in prison is a threat to Bogdan's life. All socialists must step forward to take part in the campaign to secure his freedom. Sign the petition and join the campaign here! wsws.org/en/special/pages/fr…
We demand the British government and PM Andy Burnham, who's enjoying a close relationship with the Ukrainian regime and president Zelensky, intervene in the case of anti-war activist Bogdan Syrotiuk, the Ukrainian anti-war activist sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on charges of “high treason” for opposing NATO and for calling for solidarity with Ukrainian and Russian workers

JD explained: “Your safety and the safety of the passengers is more important than anything. It doesn’t matter if it’s too hot, too cold, if you’re not safe to drive, safety is number one. You cannot be selfish. You know you’re not feeling well, and driving is not right." Another driver told WSWS reporters, “We had a problem, and they should have told us they’ve resolved it, or at least set out a timeframe, one or two months. But they didn’t tell us anything, both Unite and the transport companies.” One young worker said, “I haven’t heard anything. Not in the group chats, and not from the union rep.” Asked what he thought about Unite calling off the strike, “It’s bullshit. I think they were ready to just accept any offer.”

The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) has issued an urgent appeal to the Stop the War Coalition (STWC), the leadership of the anti-war movement in Britain, to take action and publicise the plight of Ukrainian socialist Bogdan Syrotiuk, sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by the Zelensky regime last Monday for calling for the unity of Ukrainian and Russian workers against the war.

The Socialist Equality Party (UK) has concluded a series of public meetings, “Your Party’s collapse—Time to build the Socialist Equality Party”. A lively discussion followed the opening report at each meeting. Retail worker Mae said: “The answers were very in-depth and included a lot of historical context, which I liked because communism and socialism are very old concepts now. It was good that there was a lot of historical knowledge and evidence to support the ideas being put forward. It felt like there was a solid foundation.” Medical student Alenke: “We need a complete upheaval of the existing system. Because we’re not just fighting people here. We are fighting a whole system. And you can’t just replace people from the existing system.”

“NHS Fightback, representing healthcare workers, doctors, and nurses in Britain, finds this conduct abhorrent. We support the demand for a full investigation, a public repudiation by the UAW of the threat made against Lehman, accompanied by a formal apology, and a guarantee that the remainder of the 2026 election is conducted free from intimidation. “Healthcare workers in Britain understand what intimidation means. Under the Labour government, doctors and nurses who opposed the Gaza genocide have faced suspension, removal from the medical register, and doxxing by far-right forces. The UAW appears to be adopting its own Trumpian tactics of intimidation against rank-and-file members... “We can all see why this is happening. Lehman is being targeted for his prominent campaign to abolish the bureaucracy and build rank-and-file power." We call on workers to register their opposition to this incitement to violence against Will Lehman by emailing the UAW at [email protected] and copying the Will Lehman campaign at [email protected].

Postal workers at Royal Mail in Britain have added their voices to the growing international condemnation of the public death threat made against Will Lehman, a Mack Trucks worker and candidate in the United Auto Workers (UAW) presidential election, by a senior UAW official. George, a postal worker in Scotland, said: “I stand in solidarity with Will Lehman and encourage UAW workers in the US and the working class to stand up and show support in opposing the death threat made against a rank-and-file worker and a socialist standing in the UAW Presidential election." A colleague, John, added: “It was sickening to see the image put up by the UAW official about Will Lehman. This type of intimidation has been going on for a long time but its normally carried out behind the scenes by the bureaucracy. I know this from my own experience, but this takes it to a different level." The PWRFC calls on workers to register their opposition to this incitement to violence against Will Lehman by emailing the UAW at [email protected] and copying the Will Lehman campaign at [email protected].

Over the weekend, French authorities ordered the total clearance, by land and sea, of the Gironde region of the south west—one of the country’s main holiday destinations—and the port city of Bordeaux, with a metropolitan population of 850,000 people, began drawing up plans for its own evacuation. The engulfing of much of southern Europe by forest fires, worse than any before, is the result of world governments’ failure to do what is needed to restrict carbon emissions and global heating, compounded by decades of defunded forestry and civil protection.
