What happened in the FSU/UVA game? I thought the Noles defense was awful. How'd they shutdown Virginia?

New York City is 9% Muslim and has a Muslim mayor, which scares a lot of people, most of whom don't live here. This afternoon on the train ride home (air-conditioned, thank god), I see an Arab-looking girl in a headscarf and a long, conservative dress chatting animatedly with her friend, a Chinese-American girl (New York is 15% Asian) in shorts and a tank top. As far as I can tell, neither one of them mentions Sharia or jihad; instead, they seem to be looking at pictures and arguing about which boy (I assume) looks cutest. They address each other as "bro." A Caribbean woman enters the car, chatting on her phone. She is heavyset and middle-aged, with dyed orange hair. She sits down and gets off the phone as the train leaves the station. Next stop, another middle-aged black woman, more conservatively dressed, sits down next to her. She's reading "Kin" by Tayari Jones (an Oprah Book Club recommendation). (New York is 20% black, about 1/3 of those from the Caribbean.) At the same time, a white father and daughter come in. People scrunch aside so they can sit together. He starts to read a picture book to her, but after a bit, she insists she can read on her own. He pulls out his own book. (New York is 31% non-Hispanic white.) A few stops later, a Hispanic man gets on the train with a guitar. Oh no! But it turns out he's pretty good (often not the case), I enjoy his plaintive ballads about love or something. I give him a dollar, and he says "Gracias." (New York is 29% Hispanic.) There's one annoying drunk dude, an older white guy. I assume he's drunk and not crazy or homeless because his clothes are nice and he's clutching a phone, but he seems on the verge of passing out, repeatedly bending over slowly until another lurch of the train wakes him up and he straightens. The dad with the daughter looks alert and peeved. Understandably! I get out at my stop, along with the drunk guy, but I take a different set of stairs to avoid dealing with him. Then a short walk from the station in the sweltering heat, with a brief stop at my Yemeni bodega (more Muslims!). Finally, I pass a Cuban-run barbershop with no one getting a haircut, and a couple sitting outside (the owners, I assume) listening to salsa. I get home and turn on the damn AC, safe once more from assault and/or bad serenades.

It’s a problem that democrats don’t understand the legitimate problem with this framing.
BREAKING: In a stunning moment, Donald Trump just made clear the U.S. government won’t fund childcare services because we’re a big country that’s fighting wars. No wonder the American people don’t think he cares about them. Wow.

I don't know why, but @jaketapper has never corrected his now demonstrably false reporting on 10/7 sexual violence. Instead, he's out here sharing a ludicrous post that calls Drop Site "terror propaganda" and a "fake news site denying that there were any rapes on 10/7." First of all, we don't say there were definitively zero. We say there is no credible evidence of any. Not a single independent investigation has turned up a single instance. If one eventually does, we will of course report it. Tapper himself led the charge on some of the worst reporting in a generation, reporting that was used to launch a genocide before falling apart under scrutiny. Tapper, for instance, gave prominent voice to a first responder who claimed to have seen evidence of two SAs in Kibbutz Be'eri. Those high-profile allegations, as we've reported, have since been conclusively shown to have been false and even the Israeli government and the NYT have retracted them, but Tapper has never corrected his piece or even addressed it. It's fundamental to journalism that if we make a mistake, we correct the record transparently. He refuses to do so. And once Bari Weiss is his boss, if the Gulf countries don't back out of the deal, he won't ever have to. He also relied heavily in his influential 2023 report on Shari Mendes, a volunteer at a morgue who infamously fabricated a horrifying crime, saying, "A baby was cut out of a pregnant woman and beheaded and then the mother was beheaded.” There is no dispute: that did not happen. She also made all manner of lurid claims to Tapper and others that were shown to be false later. He has never addressed this. The case he's citing here below has no corroboration and on the face of it stretches credulity. Tapper is sharing a post from a witness who claims several militants pulled a woman out of a car and "the terrorists sounded like they were drinking a cocktail at the beach. When they finished, they fired an RPG at her car and burned her." So according to Tapper here, the victim was put back in a car and after that, they fired an RPG at the car and burned it. Think about that. It's utterly preposterous. They fired an RPG at a woman in a car from point-blank range? Wouldn't that also blow them up too? And they did all this with IDF helicopters bearing down on them? It's an impossibly absurd scenario, but to Tapper it's conclusive proof. Tapper finds that not just credible, but credible enough to call another news outlet "fake news" and "terror propaganda." It's one thing for Jake never to correct his now-debunked reporting. It's another entirely to call us "terror propaganda" merely for honestly reporting on these claims. I assume he's just salty that The Free Press scooped him on the story of the century, Mamdani's wife's instagram likes. But not too late to host a segment on her!

NEW: NY State Attorney General Letitia James reached a settlement with far-right Zionist group Betar US, which will result in the group disbanding. The AG's office investigated Betar for "violence against and harassment of Muslim, Arab, Palestinian, and Jewish activists."

The org advertises illegal settlements on their own website. So it’s actually 100% true.
The Nefesh B'Nefesh website advertises illegal settlements as quaint little communities for American Jews to move to, while settler terrorism against Palestinians in the West Bank is increasing every day nbn.org.il/community-guide/

Replying to @PabloTorre
This is embarrassing, Pablo. Your “big investigation” uncovered that Riley Gaines is paid to share her story and that being forced to compete against a man in an NCAA swimming championship changed her perspective on trans issues.

NYT's “Screams Without Words”, which tried to make the case that "Hamas Weaponized Sexual Violence on Oct. 7", is IMO the worst piece of American journalism in the 21st century. A hoax from start to finish. Everything @gettleman wrote was based on fraud. He exploited a dead Israeli woman and her family to falsely portray her as a sexual violence victim. He used qualified language ("believe" "appear") to lodge evidence-free allegations. He relied on discredited sources who made demonstrably false claims. He enlisted an Israeli stringer who was an open cheerleader for genocide. He exploited the sensitivities around sexual violence allegations and the inclination to believe them. All in the service of helping Israel portray Palestinians as savages who deserved to be mass murdered. In an honest media system, the NYT's refusal to retract this fraudulent story would be a permanent scandal.
NEW: 300+ writers, scholars and public figures – including almost 150 past New York Times contributors – have committed to refusing to write for the paper’s Opinion section until our the paper 1) addresses it's anti-Palestinian bias, 2) retracts the widely debunked investigation “Screams Without Words.” and 3) and calls for a U.S. arms embargo of Israel. The Opinion section is where the paper creates plausible deniability for its anti-Arab racism and its complicity in genocide. And while they treat the lies of the Israeli government as fact in their News section, they render the genocide debatable and relegate it to the Opinion page. But the section is nothing without the freelance contributors who write for it--and they are choosing integrity over prestige.
