A Houston mail carrier was arrested outside his own post office with school tax checks stuffed in his Range Rover. Eurey Dewayne Smith has delivered mail for almost 14 years. Prosecutors say investigators found 12 letters in his SUV, and 11 were addressed to the Spring Branch ISD tax office. That is just the tip of it. Federal investigators are chasing more than 220 stolen property tax checks worth over $4 million, missing from the mail since January, then altered and cashed. Families were reporting this back in February. It took until October for anybody to get cuffed. Texans already get crushed by property taxes. Now they have to wonder if the mail even gets the check where it's going. The Harris County DA wanted a $1 million bond and says heavier charges are coming. If the charges hold up, throw the book at him. We are six days from an election, and people are trusting that same mail system with their ballots.
