It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good. As promised I’ve given the appearance fees* (and a top up from my PoF account) for talking Manchester City x 114 to @samaritans. Men in particular are hopeless at looking after what’s going on in their heads. In the words of The Rifles song “and I smile when you’re there and I cry when I’m all alone”. Samaritans are there for you in those moments. *Most don’t pay anything BTW.

Tomorrow morning’s diary. At this rate I’ll have done 115 interviews by the end of next week. I don’t ask for a payment, it’s not right to benefit. Instead ask for a donation to @samaritans who do brilliant work listening to people in distress. Suicide is still the biggest killer of men under 50 and women under 40 in the UK.

To realize how far behind United is its rivals -- I suggest that every United fan take a moment and think about these wage figures from Chris at @TheAthleticFC. The cost of a player that earns 200k a week is £10m. United's wage bill is £168m behind City. £128m behind Liverpool. £74m behind Chelsea. These are 24/25 figures, the gap to Arsenal will be as big right now. In other words -- if United today signed 17 new players, without selling anyone, to 200k a week contracts, United's wage bill would only match what City pay its players. If United signed 8 new players to 400k a week contracts, without selling anyone United's wage bill would BARELY match what City pay its players. 8 new 400k a week players walking through the door today to join our squad, nobody leaving. Then we match City. An even more absurd example -- if United sold for example Mount, Zirkzee, Ugarte, De Ligt, Mazraoui -- and signed 5 new players EACH earning 769k per week, United's wage bill would just match City's. Not exceed it. Just match it. The gap to Liverpool is almost as big, 13 new players signed for 200k a week instead of 17. These gaps will not be any different this season just because United have CL football since City, Liverpool and Arsenal have signed a ton of expensive players. For players like Eliott Anderson or Alex Semenyo -- no decision exist whether to sign for City or United. The wages City pays to its players is simply on a different planet. You have to leave at the very very least £37.5m on the table if you want to chose United over City (i.e. you are paid 150k less a week on average).
#MUFC wage bill was £302m in 2025-26, a six-year low Compared to 2024-25 wage bills (as no other clubs have released 25-26 figs), United wage bill last season was £47m behind Arsenal, £74m behind Chelsea, £128m behind Liverpool, £168m behind Man City More on @TheAthleticFC soon

🚨🎙️ Gary Neville on Manchester United’s Summer Recruitment and Michael Carrick; 🗣️“Look, I’m sitting here absolutely fuming. Michael comes in as interim, works absolute miracles to drag this team into third place and back into the Champions League, and how does the board reward him? By handing him Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos while explicitly admitting we can’t even compete for £100m players! It is an absolute disgrace. Look at the landscape right now. Manchester City go out and sign world-class, ready-made operators. Arsenal are adding top-tier international depth in every single window. Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham—they’re all spending £100m-plus on transformative, premier talent because they actually want to win titles. Meanwhile, Manchester United—the biggest football club in the world—is standing there with its hands in its pockets, asking a young manager to do the impossible with a squad that is miles off the top two! You’ve got a core of players that has already failed three or four different managers, and instead of giving Michael the heavy artillery he needs to go toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta, they’re asking him to work another miracle. Tielemans is a decent footballer, Santos has potential, but are they changing the standard at Old Trafford? Not a chance! It’s the exact same pattern we saw with Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The executive structure hides behind a club legend’s goodwill, throws him a couple of budget-conscious additions, and when the squad inevitably runs out of steam against squads that have double the quality, it’ll be Michael who takes the rap. They are setting him up for failure all over again, and it is completely unacceptable for a club of this size.”

Many have asked why I have been so silent these past weeks. I'm heartbroken to say my beautiful, darling wife passed away on Thursday. She had held my heart in her hand from the first moment I saw her and we shared 36 wonderful years together. She had bravely battled cancer with courage and fortitude for many years yet still never lost the ability to light up a room with her beautiful smile, her wonderful sense of humour and her laughter. Not once did she give up the hope for life. I truely believe there is more to this existence than we know and that one day we shall be reunited by our love for each other, a love that was so honest and so real and so true. Until then I shall hold her tightly in my heart. When my daughter and I returned home from the hospital a red rose had appeared in our garden. It was right outside our door and had appeared from nowhere in a clump of dry weeds. Red roses were my wife’s favorite flower. She wore 3 in her hair at our wedding and carried a bouquet of red roses. I had asked her to send me a sign before she passed to say she was ok. It must have been sent by her. You will stay forever in my heart until we are together again my darling ❤️

Southerners when the North gets any crumb of infrastructure/investment:
I’ve been highly suspicious of Andy Burnham for years. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder about the North-South divide. Why should London (that is propping up this country MASSIVELY) funnel wealth to the north that isn’t doing anything for itself

I really do miss pre-solver poker. Back then, everyone was in the streets trying things with no answer keys. It led to tons of pure exploits and incredibly interesting decisions. You actually had to figure out your opponent in real-time, which created so many distinct, unorthodox playing styles that you just don't see much in the modern game.

As an Arsenal fan, I have always enjoyed our historic rivalry with Manchester Utd. Above all, I admire its identity as a diverse club with players & fans from all over the world. Jim Ratcliffe’s comments are a disgrace. Migrants aren’t the problem. Tax-dodging billionaires are.
