“Regrettably, the Church of England chose to take one step forward and two steps backwards. The manner of their apology through a stage-managed corporate video which excluded campaigners served to very publicly, and visibly, contradict their claims about listening.” Powerful article by @GrandCamouflage at the University of Lancaster helped me understand clearly what many adoptees are asking of the @churchofengland @ArchbishopSarah . It traces the history of the forced adoption era and argues that adoption was often presented as a clean solution: a child placed with a new family, the past forgotten and everyone able to move on. The reality, the author argues, is far more complex. Separation, loss, identity, grief and unanswered questions often remain throughout life. Adoptees @AdultAdopteeMov are inviting us in the Church to rethink what apology and repentance actually looks like. It is not simply: “We are sorry.” But: “We will listen.” “We will share power.” “We will repair where we can.” “We will remember.” “We will allow those who were harmed to help shape what justice looks like.” For Jesus repentance was never simply saying sorry, but turning, repair and changed relationships. The true test of our repentance is not whether we can name the sins of yesterday but whether we are willing to change how we act today. adultadoptee.uk/the-myth-of-…

🙏 @Rgt71Robert. I was in that 1st mtg, as a 1974 @churchofengland Children's Society adoptee. The meeting did not make me feel safe. I felt insulted by 1 "Safeguarding" member, who announced that he met a 1st mother & adoptee - "..THEY didn't consider themselves survivors". 😵‍💫😡 – at Camberley, South East
This is us on @churchofengland @synod need to pay close attention to these criticisms from adoptees. Our recent apology about our dreadful history of abuse in ‘mother and baby homes’ fronted by @ArchbishopSarah is insufficient for them. Further they draw attention to the fact that they could not even take part in the process because of a lack of good safeguarding within the present day process itself. That is truly appalling. The movement from Justin to Sarah even if it has a change of tone is yet to show any substantive meaningful and practical change for survivors. We must hold ourselves to account.

Seems the main thing being safeguarded is the reputation of the institution rather than recognising the lifelong harms inflicted on mother and child, torn apart in their purported best interests to be “saved”, “rescued” and “chosen”.

'Church of England's forced adoption apology is poor'. In @BBCSpotlight coverage, @stoweyvik contrasts the sincere, caring response of @bathwells with the 'weak and badly worded' apology from @churchofengland which evades accountability. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy4e…

"Church of England 'profoundly sorry' for forced adoption, @ArchbishopSarah tells @itvnews". Coverage and exclusive interview from @SarahCorkerNews. Actions speak louder than words. This corporate video is deeply underwhelming, to put it politely. itv.com/news/2026-06-18/chur…

We covered an important (and upsetting) story on the last Radio 4 #TheNakedWeek of the series, all about forced adoption and a drug called DES. You can read about it in @ObserverUK today, written by our very own @CatNeilan observer.co.uk/news/national…

A child can never give consent to sexual activity. If abuse happened to you, it was never your choice and it was never your fault. No matter what you said, did or didn’t do at the time, responsibility always lies with the person who abused you.

✨ Joy is resistance. For adoptees, choosing joy isn’t ignoring the complexity, it’s reclaiming space to feel, to celebrate, and to exist beyond survival. Joy is proof that healing is happening, even in small moments.

We often hear from survivors that childhood trauma can continue to impact life well into adulthood. Non-recent childhood abuse is just as serious as recent abuse, and its impacts can be just as strong. We are here for every survivor - no matter how long ago the abuse happened.

Delighted to see my paper on paediatric cardiac surgery, @AlderHeyCharity and @AlderHey from 1948 to 1991 published and selected as Editor's Choice in @MedHums_BMJ! Part of a special issue edited by Ellen Stewart and @jenny_crane. #OpenAccess here: mh.bmj.com/content/51/4
Last-minute prep for my paper for 'Charity and Children's Hospital' event this Friday at Strathclyde. I'll be speaking on... ...Liverpool! (surprise, surprise) "Alder Hey's heart of gold: charity, cardiac surgery and the distortion of paediatric services in Liverpool, 1948-90"

Last year, 91 young people who left care took their own lives. That’s just the number we know about — and we all know there are more. This is why I will never stop fighting to make care experience a protected characteristic alongside my friend and colleague Terry Galloway, and together we will not stop. The government already has the evidence. It has the data. It has the stories. So the question is no longer what do we need? — it’s how many more lives have to be lost before action is taken? I have huge respect for colleagues in government, including Josh MacAlister, and I know he is working hard to support this movement. But extending corporate parenting alone is not enough. Not even close. It is time — long past time — to listen to people with lived experience. Because children in care are not broken. The system is. And until that truth is acted on, more young people will be failed, and more families will be grieving when they shouldn’t have to. @SkyNews @NickMartinSKY @TerryGalloway

When abuse happens again in adulthood, it reflects the abuser’s harmful actions - never the survivor’s experiences or choices. Yes, trauma can shape how we see the world and connect with others, but responsibility for abuse always lies with the abuser.

Even adoption societies at the time agreed with this sentiment. I dug out an archival exchange between the government and representative body from 1951 a couple of years ago which showed that they knew there was a lack of genuine choice. youtube.com/watch?v=AX5HcJFJ…

Pauline may not have advocated for an apology, but she was on the receiving end of the injustice for which so many others are - rightly - campaigning for one. It wasn't 'society', and all affected weren't teenage girls. It was a broad spectrum of experiences.

With all the tributes flooding in about Pauline Collins it’s worth remembering that she was an unmarried mother whose child was adopted after going to a mother and baby home in the 1964. Another who won’t hear the apology from the government she deserved.
