I was refused a same-day GP appointment this week to have my wound checked - just days after breast cancer surgery. I was worried it might be infected. The practice told me to go to Urgent Care. I was warned of a two-hour wait, but the staff there immediately recognised that a waiting room full of coughing and spluttering wasn’t ideal post-surgery - and saw me quickly. Their kindness made me cry. They understood what I was going through, and even recognised that seeing my breast for the first time after surgery, when they removed the dressing, might be upsetting. By contrast, my GP surgery “couldn’t override the system” to give me a same-day appointment. For a suspected infection. In a post-operative wound. When I’m feeling up to it, I’m going to have a proper look at the legislation around this. Because I’m fairly sure my GP practice - and many others - are not operating lawfully. And they’re getting away with it. Time and time again.
