Film culture escaping IMDB's boomer/gen x tyranny and being given a new place for younger people to consolidate around has opened up an entire generation to different kinds of movies and if the cost is being forced to see teenagers posting annoying reviews it's a fair tradeoff
Replying to @staticbluebat
people who are too young to remember a world before letterboxd really don't understand. it's been the most significant positive force for cinephilia of the century. for all its faults, it has completely changed film culture for the better

saying fiction doesn't affect reality is like saying a prism doesn't affect light: fiction is fragments of reality refracted through the mind of a writer. there's always truth in it; sometimes, the truth is "i am a liar", which is often the case with much of what we call history
The "fiction doesn't affect reality" argument never made sense to me. Fiction has inspired people to do some great things & improve themselves as people. Fiction has changed people's perception of the world. If fiction doesnt affect reality, the world wouldnt be the same.

ah yes, i often find myself fleeing the search and rescue teams when my hiking trips go awry.
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

Quotes filled with grunting about antisemites targeting a Jewish community centre...the protests are led by Jewish anti-Zionist groups and are due to JW3 hosting an event encouraging settlement in occupied Palestine.
The Met has but in place a designated restriction on protests in the vicinity of JW3, Finchley, today, Sunday, 25 October, as part of the policing operation to prevent intimidation and disruption to the local community.

There is no way this many people are eating foie gras regularly. A lot of you are just pro-cruelty on principle.

Supporting the Sameer Project is essential!
Bakeries are closing across Gaza. Flour prices are rising. Food and essential goods are still not entering in the quantities desperately needed. And once again, families are facing the terrifying reality of not knowing where their next loaf of bread will come from. Please support here: chuffed.org/project/help-us-… On October 14, The Sameer Project distributed 514 bundles of freshly baked bread, including 250 bundles to displaced families in Al-Asdiqaa Camp in Deir al-Balah. Our bakery remains operational, but rising flour prices mean every bundle costs more to produce. Families cannot afford another bread crisis, and we cannot afford to scale back production. Bread is survival, especially when community kitchens are closing and market stalls are empty. Help us keep our bakery running and making over 5,000 loaves per day. Donate to The Sameer Project’s Food and Water Campaign: chuffed.org/project/help-us-… Other ways to donate include: paypal.me/mahertali (Paypal option, please make sure to add a message saying "Food") account.venmo.com/u/Maher-Al… (Venmo option, please make sure to add a message saying "Food")

the very least that ought to happen is the ghouls that caused this should lose their jobs. that's at the very extreme end of generosity.
For weeks, some racist Western media outlets published story after story against Professor Jason Arday, at times every few hours, branding him a plagiarist. They hounded him relentlessly, and the pressure became too much for him. He committed suicide in August, aged just 41. This week, he was cleared of plagiarism yet again. A fresh investigation by the academic publisher Taylor & Francis found nothing to support the allegations. Of the four formal investigations into his work, not one substantiated the charge. The same publications that hunted him are now silent. They have not corrected their reporting, and they have not had the decency to admit they were wrong. This is how hard it is to be Black in a deeply racist world, and to succeed where they expect you to fail. Even those who present themselves as the moral conscience of the Western world have nothing to say. In a shameful act, the Oxford Reform Society has invited Nathan Cofnas, the self-described "race realist" who first raised the plagiarism allegations against Professor Arday, to speak at Oriel College next month. Oriel College, the home of Cecil John Rhodes’ statue. These institutions are racist. Sadly, Black leaders have failed to build rival institutions that give Black people respect and intellectual dignity. We are forced to endure disrespect because our leadership has failed us completely. Black billionaires line up to hand money to these institutions in exchange for meaningless honorary titles, instead of building our own. May Professor Arday's soul rest in peace. You were hounded to your death by publications that today do not even have the shame to admit they were wrong.

Rest in Power Jason Arday 😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔 None of the people who smeared his name in the press are clearing it. This is so infuriating.

wish people would stop trying to analogize wage labor with slavery. what it is on its own is bad enough, you'd don't have to dilute slavery to intensify it.
