One of the managers involved in trying to shut down the Aspley library told me it was because the library was not being used. It’s on the edge of a huge “council estate”. She pushed for the new Sherwood library in preference to it. Typical #CultOfManagerialism incompetence.

Paid, professional library staff are essential for an accountable and professional library system. Volunteers do great work but every library should have a paid, professional librarian present. A school would never be run by volunteers - why should libraries?

The library minister also has statutory duty to 'promote the improvement of the public library service' - both duties can be interpreted with far greater ambition – at London, England

Local/national campaigners & unions have been using deprivation indices etc to argue against library cuts and closures for years, I wrote a guide to doing this for ‘Speak up for Libraries’. Most EIA’s like consultations aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.

@SaveNottmLib @BBCr4today The Labour led Nottingham City council is planning to close yet more libraries - it is clear that @UKLabour has no vision for libraries seeing them as a burden not an agent of social mobility

@mrjamesob wouldn’t it be good if we had a renewed vision for libraries in our communities ?
If you use a Nottingham library, especially if you use one of the libraries under threat of closure, we encourage you to please respond to this survey from @guardian asking how libraries shape your life. Reply here too if you'd like to share with us 💚📚💜

This is an enormous scandal and needs to be a priority for the new Government. Libraries are absolutely vital community assets, particularly in the most deprived past of the country. We’re proud to champion them through @WarmWelcome_UK
Important new analysis from @BBCNews reveals extent of library cuts since 2016. The poorest areas are around four times more likely to lose a local library than the richest. Our CEO @HunterIsobel is quoted bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn9l…

Just booked a stall for Nottingham Green Festival. The organisers promise us good weather and that the gazebo we are in will not blow away. Because they can see the future. And we believe them.
We will be the ones without flowers in our hair. Well maybe @GiselleKLeeb will.

If you live in #Nottingham please take a moment to support your local libraries before we lose them forever.

Large gathering outside Sherwood Library this morning.
It was due to open this summer but has been plagued by over 130 defects.
"This wonderful gathering should not be taking place on the street, it should be in Sherwood Library," protesters say.
