Of all the Jews in Brest, only nineteen are believed to have survived the Holocaust. Six of them lived because of one brother and sister, and the woman who stood beside them. When the Germans began liquidating the Brest Ghetto, Pyotr Golovchenko and his wife Sofya opened their part of the house to Israel Manker and his two children. In another part of the same home, Pyotr’s sister Pelageya Makarenko hid nine-year-old Misha Engelman and the sisters Maya and Zhenya Katsaf. These were not empty rooms. Pelageya, Pyotr, and Sofya had children of their own. They knew that hiding Jews meant the Germans could kill every member of their families. They hid them anyway. They fed them, sheltered them, and kept them alive while death swept through the streets outside. Ordinary people, parents themselves, chose to protect other parents’ children at the risk of their own. In 1998, Yad Vashem recognized Pelageya Makarenko, Pyotr Golovchenko, and Sofya Golovchenko as Righteous Among the Nations. Their quiet courage remains a light: proof that even in the darkest hours, some refused to look away.
