Comfortable win for Andy Burnham this week. Mistake by Kemi Badenoch to go on Jackdaw after Government approval today. Another mistake to have a dig over music on trains. People care about this stuff. Plus Truss book is a gift.

The current Burnham strategy of making real change on smaller things fast, while setting out a prospectus for larger change in the coming years, makes total sense in this age of global populism - you donāt need an early election to make sense of this. Itās just common sense.
Every week, month and year is now part of a permanent campaign season; increasing or maintaining your support is core business for a party in government just as much as it is for an opposition; and the real art is weaving together Fast and Big change.
Mamdani is filling every pothole he can find at light speed, and removing sidewalk scaffolding that has been up for years. Heās also doing bigger things that take longer to be felt. The combination is where the magic happens. Building popular support is not a sign of shallow and irresponsible behaviour. Itās a central priority for any leader.
And ending the pensions triple lock and taking on the social care crisis in the UK arenāt easy-mode politics.

EXCL: Andy Burnham has told officials to rip up their plans for how to fix Thames Water and present him with more radical options for what to do with the stricken company.
In an early test of his promise to bring āthe essentials of lifeā under public control, the PM is urging his advisers to go back to the drawing board and create a new list of policies for the utility.
One option being looked at is to convert about £100m of outstanding fines into a government stake in the company, saving its creditors money but giving ministers some say in how it is run.

Perceptions of Andy Burnham's political identity have strengthened since entering Number 10.
Prior to becoming PM only 37% thought it was clear what he stood for. However, since he's become Prime Minister this has jumped to 57%.

NEW: France has dropped its opposition to the UK being included in the EUās āMade in Europeā legislation as long as the British government aligns with the blocās position over tariffs on Chinese EVs.
In a breakthrough for Andy Burnham, Paris on Thursday came round to backing Germany, which has always supported the UKās calls to be designated European for the purposes of the Industrial Accelerator Act.
The legislation, which is in its draft stage, is designed to protect domestic manufacturing from cheap Chinese competition.
According to a joint Franco-German paper seen by the Guardian, the two countries are now proposing that for the car industry specifically the UK could be included in the "Made in Europe" scheme. @lisaocarroll reports
