Stats like these can actually understate disparities, including because: * “Nationality” rather than origin is graphed. Several notorious offenders have been British nationals of foreign origin, including the leader of the Rochedale rape gang. * As noted by Britain’s Casey report, there are underlying reporting gaps. Don’t want to pick on Britain here, because these correlations aren’t unique to UK. Shows why culture + selection effects matter for migration.

A friend of mine had to do a 15 minute interview about his job, income, previous rental history, etc, in order to *view* a flat. Luckily for him, he has a well-paid job, has lived in England all his life, and an impeccable rental history. I feel bad for people who don't.

This is exactly the sort of thing the people who introduced laws making it impossible to evict anyone will now seek to ban.

It’s your job to maintain the pretence you have some expertise in the area you ‘cover’ rather than throwing up your hands and declaring ‘this shit crazy,’ on taxpayer funded TV.
To the people ragging on BBC's Joe Tidy for not knowing about PHP: Guess what? Nor did 99% of the general public. It is a journalist's job to help people understand complex subjects. We're writers, not technicians - we speak to the experts. (P.S. Joe is the best in the biz.)

All they would be teaching you is that your grandparents came here voluntarily and nobody asked them to. Would be like teaching the history of various British Airways flights where the passengers felt particularly self important.
In school man had to learn about anne frank Boy in striped pyjamas Holocaust etc etc etc Didnt once get taught about Windrush in school.

The nationalists are the ones defying the Belfast Agreement but they genuinely and probably rightly don't expect external observers to really believe that's even possible.
28 years after the Good Friday Agreement, political unionism still doesn’t get it. There will be no unwanted, supremacist, sectarian orange parade down Garvaghy Road or through any other area. Nor will there be domination of any section in our society.

Underrated part of British police's approach to public order. Genuinely interested in a counter opinion on this. – at Merton, London

It’s quite hard to have a running battle with British police because they just wait for everyone to get bored then arrest however many of the offenders filmed is deemed necessary by the political authorities.

Why are multiple extremely long standing members of this think tank departing since Daniel Hannan took it over? Particularly why are the beer drinkers leaving?
I know this isn't LinkedIn, but nonetheless, some professional news. After 18 years, five books, three dozen papers and thousands of articles, presentations, podcasts, videos, media appearances etc etc – I am leaving the IEA in a few weeks' time. I am, however, neither joining Novara Media, nor the Guardian, nor SOAS. I am not starting a podcast with Gary Stevenson either. I'll continue to promote extremely uncool, cringey low-status opinions in other ways. Watch this space.

Incorrect. The reason we have fewer riots in Britain is because we don’t have many North Africans, our ethnic minorities are geographically integrated at vast cost via social housing, and our police refuse to participate in any battles so there is barely anyone to throw rocks at.
People are giving weird excuses for why French style riots don't happen in the UK. Reality: we're a fatally conservative country that can't unite on any one thing and begrudges anyone that tries to aim high. Free meals for kids, fair pay for nurses, TFL strikes, all get pushback.

The Telegraph sale story is really wild. It's on the verge of being sold to a Gulfi-owned investment group. Tory media outriders launch a huge press campaign to block the sale, and eventually the sale is blocked on the grounds that editorial freedom could not be guaranteed

I simply do not believe these fines will ever be issued in a way that is proportionate to who is actually responsible for obnoxious noises on trains.
🚨 NEW: The Government has announced headphone dodgers on trains will face fines of up to £1,000 as a nationwide campaign launches today

France has the highest social spending of any country in the world
A nice old building burns, and so the pearl-clutching begins. Where were these pearl clutchers when austerity was wrecking a generation? Why does one town hall grab their attention but millions of schools, hospitals, and homes dilapidated by neoliberalism are of no importance?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
France's level of public social spending was third highest in the world at 30.6% of GDP in 2024. Excluding the pandemic, it is slightly down from its 31.9% high in 2014. Total public spending is 57.2%, second highest among large countries not at war and near all-time highs. ourworldindata.org/grapher/social… ourworldindata.org/grapher/histor…

You’re going to get some very well resourced prisons as a reward
News: The French are rioting over high cost of living and under-resourced high schools. The rioters: Yes, that's what we are rioting over. The French government: Yupp, they're rioting over that. Everyone: Yepp, that's whats happening. The far right: Da Blacks! Da Muzlims!

It suggests the king is a bit of dullard who doesn’t know very much about his own family (or its history) that is supposed to be the embodiment of the nation.
Our Sovereign is a man of impeccable taste.

Under the Contempt of Court Act 1981, publications can constitute contempt if they create a substantial risk that the course of justice in active proceedings will be seriously impeded or prejudiced. Importantly, proceedings can become active before someone is charged, including when an arrest is made or an arrest warrant is issued.
Monday morning deserves a brutal wake up call today. Because, forgive me- I couldn't sleep all night WONDERING why a black man was crucified to death for allegedly copying some work and a former girlfriend of Michael Gove (they broke up weeks ago reportedly) and Oxford University professor..has been GRACED with what looks like a partial media blackout for being charged with possessing INDECENT IMAGES of kids. Why aren't you all having a frenzy over this? Pray tell...I'm waiting with coffee in hand.

I’m not sure being a fraudulent DEI hire is actually a crime so I would also have been free to say Jason Arday’s entire career was undeserved and stolen from a more deserving recipient.
