Cornell is on my TL with two stories at present. One about the appalling handling of campus rape, the other touting it as a model to emulate for restoring public trust through ā€œacademic civicsā€ and civil discourse. It’s not the only university that serves up contradictions like this—Harvard’s Steven Pinker tut-tutting the kids-these-days-don’t-read-Plato while the Epstein files came to light would be another highly public example. These things have to be addressed together, otherwise the words are worse than empty anyway.

#OTD 60 yrs ago: 1st memory @2y4m. Roadtrip Iowa-Cleveland, visiting dad’s WW2 bud & fam! They took us to a ballpark! Biggest crowd I’d yet seen! Awed by a low-flying jet, way bigger than prop jobs over Iowa. Unforgettable! I remember no music, but big bro says ’twas #TheBeatles

I’ll tell you, I think I became a historian b/c I had a teacher in HS obsessed w/the letters of Civil War nurses. This stuff matters.

#DailyLincoln "I am not ashamed to confess that twenty five years ago I was a hired laborer, mauling rails, at work on a flat-boat—just what might happen to any poor man's son! I want every man to have the chance—and I believe a black man is entitled to it—in which he can better his condition—when he may look forward and hope to be a hired laborer this year and the next, work for himself afterward, and finally to hire men to work for him! That is the true system." - Abraham Lincoln, speech at New Haven, CT, March 6, 1860

8/ It comes down to whether the right to run a business existed at all — the deep gender divergence @_alice_evans writes about, showing up in who printed Europe's books. Women shaped the early book trade less as writers than as the people who kept the presses alive. /end

Political leaders in BOTH parties are willing to make you hate your friends & family as long as it means they get re-elected. I'm running to end all that. It's time to remind everyone that this is about public service, not politics.

Says historian @ProfMSinha ā€œIt is a big sign of undemocratic, authoritarian rule when you question the legitimacy of your opponents to even exist, and you question the legitimacy of the citizenship of the people you don’t like.ā€
